August the rabbit had a rough week. Monday, he had a leaky butt, which I chalked up to too much calcium and left him with only hay and pellets to eat, no veggies.

After that, he slowly stopped eating, his poop got really shapeless and he was lethargic. He would kind of hide from me, but let me pet him.

Because of my work schedule, finding a vet that does rabbits and is open when I can take him didn’t pan out.

Thursday night, though he was active again and started eating kibble. Today, he’s eating hay and his poop is round, though moist.

He’s acting normal, he’s just got a really gurgly stomach. Is he out of the woods or is this some kind of false positive?

He probably has gas. It’s very common after a bout of gut slowdown. You can give him baby gas drops (simethicone), 1 ml per hour for 3 hours. Encourgage moving around.Gas can be very painful for a bunny, so it must be let out.

Leaky butt isn’t really about calcium, it’s more about a disruption of the gut microbiota. I’m so glad to hear he’s started eating again. Hay is the best thing now, so it’s really good that he’s eating hay, but the gas should be dealt with. Walmart and several other similar places has baby gas drops, pharmacies too of course.

Definitely get some Simethicone. It’s also good to keep some on hand

Some gut noises are normal, however if it’s associated with laying down and getting up often or discomfort it’s probably gas. Doesn’t hurt to give Simethicone since it’s not systemically absorbed and works in the intestines to get rid of the painful gas bubbles.

Hope he feels better and hope the poops keep on coming

If the gurgling continues then definetly give him some baby gas drops to ease the gas. You may also feel that his stomach is hard and larger than it should be. Like Bam said, somethicone works wonders and it doesn’t hurt to try it out as its hard to overdose. I use the Ovol 40ml brand, and it works great. Gave 1ml to my gassy bun and it broke down the gas. You can buy them pretty inexpensively at almost any grocery store, I bought mine at a Shoppers Drug Mart for 12$ and it works well.
