Wilmer is a 4 year old lionhead and is loved beyond measure by my husband and I. Last night I discovered three walnut sized lumps in his skin. One in each armpit and one in his dewlap. We brought him to the vet this morning and his vet believes they are lymphnodes. He thinks Wilmer has lymphoma. He wants to perform surgery and remove all three lumps to biopsy. He thinks this is the only way to extend or possibly save Wilmer. He used a needle to get some cells but the test was inconclusive. I’m at a loss of what to do. I’m terrified of him having cancer but also terrified of putting my baby through a surgery like this. Does anyone have any advice for me? Also aside from the lumps Wilmer is acting completely normal.

Are there any other symptoms? Hair loss? Crustiness? Is your rabbit overweight?

He’s not overweight but he’s pretty round in shape and no there’s no other symptoms that I’ve noticed.

The reason I’m asking is because lymphoma is often accompanied with hair loss in “random” places and scaly/scabbiness in the skin covering the tumors. Lymphoma is more common in female rabbits.

Lipomas, on the other hand, are pretty common in rabbits. And my dog had lipomas in her armpits.

Not saying your bun does or does not have lymphoma, but the fatty tumor scenario is definitely worth looking at.

I thought that the vet would say that they were fatty tumors and nothing more. But he seemed concerned by the shape and feel of them. I’m trying to stay positive because Wilmer isn’t showing other symptoms. Maybe we caught it early? Or maybe it’s not cancer? I’m terrified of the surgery he’s having tomorrow. I wish we could have confirmed it was cancer before hand. I don’t want to put my baby through a surgery he doesn’t need. I know surgery is more of a risk for rabbits than other animals. I just don’t know if I’m making the right decision.

I am not knowledgeable on rabbit cancer so take this with a pinch of salt but sometimes in humans at least, swollen lymph’s can indicate the body fighting an infection and not cancer.

I’m sorry you are dealing with this. I dont’ have any advice but want to offer some ((((Safe Procedure and Speedy Recovery))))) Vibes for your bun.

Crossing my fingers they are just benign lumps.

His vet did mention this as well. It would be amazing if it was an infection that we can treat and not cancer.
