        Some veggie questions.

1 – Do you all feed those bagged salad mixes? Like this: Bagged Salad. (Obviously not that one since it has iceberg lettuce but you get the idea)

I ask because on occasion I’ve thought about it because while they don’t stay fresh as long they’re more convenient on busy nights and sometimes they’re all we have due to me forgetting. I haven’t fed this mixes yet due to hesitation but I have fed something similar which will be mentioned soon.

2 – Tips on feeding a rabbit who gets excited over food?

Licorice loves his food. But he’s a very mellow rabbit who NEVER  bites, and will wait for it quietly. So it’s never been a problem. Winter however gets really excited when it comes. Usually it’s not a problem but it’s been worse lately. Tonight she accidentally fell over while standing up and jumping around for it. Generally I let her out, place it in, then let her back in or cover her eyes and do it, but is there a better way? (It only happens with greens – everything else she’s fine with.)

3 –  In what proportions do you feed veggies?

By this I don’t mean amount per kilo/pounds. I mean do you feed equal amounts of all veggies you buy, or is it based off a, for example, mostly kale diet? I’m wondering if it’s better to feed equal amounts. I’ve personally always made my salad makeup like this:

1/4 cup of baby spinach (Like this. It’s what I talked about with bagged veggies. I also don’t give it daily because of the oxalic acid, so it gets replaced with other things some ) then 1 cup of other lettuces (regular head of lettuce, not bagged) like romaine and endive. Then I’ve had another 1/4 of things like herbs and pepper. Should I do more equal amounts…?

1 I’ve never yet fed bagged mixes, but I’m sure there is nothing wrong with it!

2 Sorry I don’t know, don’ t have that issue. Sounds cute though You could try making her work for her veg, like hiding it in paper bags or toilet rolls, providing physical and mental exercise.  Sounds like she gets plenty of physical when you feed her though. I never just give Alfred his greens on a plate, there’s always some sort of activity Involved, just to keep him occupied and stimulated.

3 I really don’t think it matters too much. I give Alfred his veg in varying proportions, it’s kind of random. Usually herbs are in smaller amounts. I just like to give as much variety as possible, to keep his life interesting (did I mention I’m a little obsessed with making his life interesting?     ) and hopefully provide a nice variety of nutrients.

BTW, just to be nitpicky, endive is not lettuce. It’s closely related to chicory, witlof and dandelions. I mention this because it’s a good thing and means you’re giving more variety than you thought.

I do buy bagged spring mix, or more often, the spring mix in the plastic containers. I give some to my bunnies twice a day, along with other greens. You are correct about them not staying as fresh as unbagged greens. Some brands seem to be better than others. Even though I make sure that I get spring mix that has a date which is several days away, there are usually wilted or even slimy pieces right from the beginning. I’ve had some mixes that are still fresh past their date, but others that have to be discarded before their date.

What I do to make them fresh longer, is to sort through the bag or container soon after opening it. I compost any pieces that are bad or don’t look as fresh, then I wrap the rest of the mix in a paper towel and put it back in the bag or container. If you don’t get those bad pieces out, they will stick to good pieces or let out brown liquid and make the good pieces go bad. Some of the bags have too much moisture in them and that causes them to go bad quicker.

Those mixes are a good way to give a variety of lettuces to your rabbit. You just have to take a few minutes to process them to make sure they are as fresh as possible.
