I mean, do you put out a day’s worth every morning or do you top up little and often? I’ve found although my buns will still nibble if I put out a whole load of hay, nothing entices them more than topping it up (or ‘fluffing it up’) throughout the day. Of course if I put a load down and still have to top it up to encourage them, a lot is wasted. So now I just put a small handful, wait til that’s mostly gone and then put another handful down. I think my buns get bored if there’s a big load of hay down for a while,  they need the freshness lol.

I top up several times throughout the day, usually 3-4 times. If I know I’m going to be out for longer than normal, I’ll add extra. But like your buns, they always come running whenever “fresh” hay is on offer.

I top up first thing in the morning, when I get home from work, sometimes late afternoon depending on how ravenous they’ve been, then before I go to bed. Apollo especially likes to choose a choice piece from out of the hay tub before I get a chance to put new hay in their rack.

Top up a few times a day. In the morning, after school, and just before bed.

I put hay in a clean spot on the litter box. I refill it with meal times (breakfast, supper and bedtime snack). I usually check it whenever I’m in there and if I am going to be out for a few hours I always make sure to top it off.

My sweet Buttercup has been absolutely devouring her hay the past day or so, (don’t know whether it’s an ‘after spay’ effect or just coincidence) so I am topping up A LOT. I’m glad though because neither of my buns eat a bale the size of their body each day – well, Buttercup does now – I’m hoping Peanut will react the same after his neuter. So now I’m back to topping up a larger amount for her and just topping up in small amounts for little Peanut to entice him.

You know we spoke about bunnies liking ‘Malt wheats’ or Shreddies as a treat.. ?… well i sprinkle the bottom of the packet, the dusty bits on the hay and they jump on it !!! I also do this with the bottom of the pellet bag….the pellet dust… works wonders.

I’m trying out different weeds and flowers as hay toppers – so far, dandelion is a hit!

I’ve broken into my dried dandelion leaves….. rationed, as it would go veeeeeery fast otherwise…..

I might have to be a bit more frugal with the dandelion I put on Peanut’s hay because he seems to be eating the dandelion and not much of the actual hay

Every morning i fill a cardboard box with hay and replace the hay in his litter box. i also fill a hay feeder that hangs on the cage and stuff a few toilet paper rolls full of hay. Might be a little overboard, but i like him to have options and i like to know that he won’t run out while i’m in class or if i’m running late home. I usually top it off when i get home and then again before bed. and each morning do it all over again. we go through a lot of hay often throwing some out each day, but it’s cheap enough and i know he eats much more when it’s fresh vs sitting in his cage for a few days

Jake is free range in my little apartment so he has several places to get his hay fix :

1.) In a pet-store hay rack on the side of his cage (although he seems to prefer to eat it from the other side, ha!)

2.) In a large silverware drawer divider ziptied securely on the top of his cage

3.) In his treat ball (homemade with a baby ball and baby links)

4.) In a cardboard box that I leave out when I leave for class or work (it’s like a homemade digging game with newspaper and a few tiny bits of treats scattered on the bottom

5.) In his dish of pellets (where I put the day old hay ).

Like most of you, I feed my bun by putting her hay in a cardboard box. Buffy is very fussy though, and she much prefers fresh grass. Sometimes she’ll flip her box upside-down and poop on the floor-hay as if to say, “Momma, I am bored of this food. Get me something else.” If she’s in a real mood, she’ll eat her hay only if it’s fed to her by hand. What a diva!

Amelia has a hay rack in her cage, and then she also has a cardboard box full of hay, we are currently doing a mix of meadow grass and botanical grass. She’s not a great hay eater, I’m still searching for what she really likes
