        Hi everyone,

I was clipping my rabbits nails today (he HATES me touching his paws, I try to do it as gently as possible). The nail clipper caught on one of his nails and pulled it right off. It bled a little, not a lot, which confused me because it looked like the nail literally came off near the base. Anyways, my bunny groomed it for a bit, then went on the act like his normal self. What should I do? Has anyone else had this happen to them?
Ps: it looks like the nail part came off in a “tube” sort of manner. The quick still seems to be intact. None of the blood or quick seems to be on the broken off bit

It doesn’t sound so bad. I’d just let it be and check on it a couple of times per day there next few days. A little bit of bleeding is good because it flushes out bacteria. If the quick were hurt, there would’ve been a lot of bleeding – there always is, that’s why cutting into the quick is so scary (although more scary than actually harmful.)

He could’ve had a little pre-existing break and then the nail snapped off when it got caught. These things happen. If the quick wasn’t hurt, the nail will grow back.

I agree. Sometimes the nail is damaged, but doesn’t come off. The quick recedes and the nail that is there is “dead”. Then the smallest thing catching it suddenly pulls it off. The nail looks like a hollow sheath and a little nub containing the quick remains on the toe. It isn’t an usual thing to happen. Just keep an eye on it. Since it didn’t bleed a lot, then I wouldn’t worry about keeping it clean beyond his own grooming.

I agree he should be fine. The quick will dry out in a couple days and fall off of it’s own accord, then the nail should just regrow

Ive seen this happen in dogs cats and rabbits when i was working as a professional groomer. What happens is the outer most layers of the ne ail comedy off like a sheath. Keep an eye on that nail, your bun may be more sensitive about that foot since the nerve is more exposed then normal. Also keep an eye for an infection, its rare, id just watch for it for the next 10-14 days
