Hi all! My bunnies live in my garage and it’s getting cold outside. The garage keeps it like 15 degrees f warmer but I want to make sure they stay warm at night. So I bought a headlamp. I didn’t have anywhere for it to hang from the top of the hutch, so I set it up so it was hanging on a scooter sideways, shining into the hutch. I don’t see them at night but when I come out , they don’t seem to be sitting by it, but I don’t want to take it out in case they really do need it. And sometimes they wil sit looking I right into the red light. So I have two questions, do they like the heat lamp, and is it bad for there eyes? I really would a appropriate any replies!

I have never thought about using a heat lamp with a bunny. My guess is that they would not be looking into the light if it was painful, they generally have atleast a bit of sense.
How cold is your garage? You may not need the lamp, you can use warm water bottles or a heating pad instead. If you you want to use the lamp, just make sure they have an area where they can get out of the light.

Thanks so much! It usually stays between in the winter, 30-50ish degrees in there. I just got a heating blower kinda thing. Small gray box that shoots out warm air!

They don’t need a heat lamp. If you heat the space, they wpn’t be able to acclimate or grow a thick coat. 50 is quite comfortable for them. And honestly – 30 is not bad. I kept my bunnies outside a few years ago. Their first winter I gave them heat lamps top eep the temp above freezing. They never sat by the lamps. The second winter I didn’t give them heat lamps at all, just kept them wind/rain free, and the temps got down to 5F. They ate twice as much food, and consumed a lot more water, grew thick coats, and were quite happy to sit outside in the snow. They had a hutch to go into to get out of the wind, but they did spend a fair amount of time digging in the snow. Rabbits do a lot better in cold weather than we do. Their bodies are designed to handle it. Just be sure to feed them more food, and keep an eye on their water.
