There are a lot of things going on at this time of year, such as Christmas Fayres and fun places to take your children or nieces and nephews, but some people are stopping people in the street, they have a baby with them and beg for money, saying they need nappies (Diapers) or food for the baby and say they are homeless, do not fall for this trick, what they do is something called ‘Rent a Baby.’ they pay someone a few pounds or dollars to borrow a child so they can beg for money from people in the street and get money and spend it on beer and cigarettes and other things, keep your money safe in a bag with a zip not in a pocket, because if you are silly enough to give them money their friend is going through your pockets, don’t let them get your cash, stay safe.

And don’t stop for those who claim to be deaf and come from some obscure deaf people-society and want your money and your name and home address. They’re not deaf. Just tell them no. They will hear that.

These last few years we have had to become very, very used to professional beggars in our streets. I’m all for helping people in need, but I think the best way is to donate to known and legit help organizations or your Church, not give out cash money to scam-artists in the streets. In my opinion.

Here in California, I’ve seen some of these people and there are legitimately people who are deaf, but there are also pretenders, looking for sympathy.  It’s easy for me to pick them out since I took an ASL class. I can sign to them, and watch to see their response. I usually see a smile because they can appreciate that I’ve taken the time to learn some of the culture that goes with people who weren’t born like the rest of us.  If they’re confused, they’re probably a fraud lol. In either case, definitely watch out.

There are people local to me (Lancashire, UK) going round pretending to be deaf, going door telling their sob stories and trying to sell paintings

As a give away, most deaf people can’t talk. So if you get a detailed, well articulated life story, it’s highly unlikely they’re deaf

I don’t know a lot of deaf people, but I have worked with two, one is completely deaf and doesn’t say anything except brief sounds when attempting to mouth a “thanks”, the other I believe grew up deaf but has a hearing aid now and can speak, although not clearly and very limited sentence structure and vocabulary etc. That being said, there are deaf people who learn early enough with use of a hearing aid how to talk and can be very fluent.

There are of course deaf people, and I don’t mean to disrespect deaf people. But at least here, deaf people don’t go around asking for money and home addresses while their friends try to mug the people who stop to give money. I think most of us, at least in Europe, are pretty well aware of these types of scams. It’s mostly a risk for the elderly and people with disabilities. The elderly and the disabled are always the main targets because they are more or less defenseless against muggers.

Yes as some of you know I’m visually impaired, I have a cane now, I was outside a cafe whilst my friend was talking to the man who owns the cafe, a woman came up to me and told me such a sad story, she said that she had left her sister’s house, leaving her bag, keys, mobile phone and medicine, she asked me if I knew a street, I did but pretended I didn’t know it, it was only about a minute away, she moved right up to my face, she smelt of booze and asked me if I could give her £5 for bus fare because it was a long way away, my friend came out and said. “Leave the lady alone please, go.” As we walked toward the bus stop I thanked my friend and he said she was probably drunk, I said she smelt of alcohol, she was crossing the road and nearly fell over.
