Alfred and I have really been enjoying this very simple idea, so I thought I would share. I’ve made quite a few variations that I’ll spread over a few posts so I don’t get too confused

For the first and simplest version I just took a piece of cardboard and poked holes of various sizes in it. Then I stuffed tufts of hay, sprigs of herbs, twigs, dandelion stalks and pieces of vegetables in the holes, making a little rabbit garden. I stuff the plants firmly, so there is (what I imagine to be) a satisfying resistance when they are chewed upon, replicating the natural experience of eating plants from the ground.

This variation is made with a bit of cardboard packaging.

            I love it, AM!
Currently waiting for some Amazon parcels from the UK, so as soon as they arrive (cardboard!) I’m going to give it a go for Chewie.
Have you ever tried egg cartons, or are they too light?

It looks great! Quite similar to something I’ve been doing lately. I got some cardboard packing, a little like an egg carton with lots of dips and I’ve been spreading their pellets through it, and topping with their burgess treat hay. Then they have to forage for their pellets. They love it, hay and pellets end up absolutely everywhere, but it’s worth it.

                    Thanks Folks!

Q8 I have not tried egg cartons, but I think they would work. I hope you’ll try it!

Azerane yes it seems bunny fun is always messy

This little bit of ‘grassland’ is made with some cardboard shaped like a tray that was part of the packaging for a freezer. Once again I just  poked holes in the cardboard and stuffed them. This one is big enough for Alfred to hop on. Scattering pellets over it for foraging works nicely.

                        I love this idea!

Azerane, do your bunnies have success foraging for their pellets? I’d love to make Tolly work a lil harder for his food while I’m at work- he’s getting a nice lil double chin haha. But I’d be worried he’d just flip the whole thing over playing with it and accidentally starve XD

Haha, yes they do make a mess. They’re pretty successful about fishing the pellets out, Apollo is usually the one that gets tired of it and wants to throw the whole thing around, which results in hay and pellets all over the floor, and usually some hay on Luna too, but then they just hoover them up from the floor instead

Yes Bam I tell him that but I don’t think he listens

For a less messy version of Azeranes idea perhaps you could skip the hay: scrunch up pieces of paper, put them in a shallow box and hide pellets in and among them. You could even skip the box by hiding the pellets inside the pieces of paper and scattering them around your buns habitat. Vegetable pieces are also good to hide in crumpled paper.

My bun’s habitat also happens to be my habitat there’s no off limits space for him… but mess be damned, cuz he looks so stinking cute when he’s enjoying himself, right?

                                  Q8 Chewie certainly is irresistible

Continuing the theme of crumpled paper, for these gardens I took some pieces of paper and scrunched them into flower shapes, then sat the pointy end in the holes in the cardboard, then dropped some pellets inside each flower.

It is very cute when Alfred has his snozz stuck in the flowers, but I haven’t managed a photo yet

These are awesome! Thank you for this genius idea. My bun, Poe Wembley, refuses to eat fresh greens from a dish, but he will eat greens growing in a pot (parsley, mint, basil, etc.). So I’m thinking this might be the perfect way to get him to eat more fresh greens and veggies. Thank you!
