Hi everyone, I have two bunnies that poop a lot (as all rabbits do) and I heard that their pellets work great as fertilizer in the garden. However, I use newspaper in their litter boxes and I don’t want to compost that as well because of the dyes and inks on the pages. Its also really difficult to separate the poop from the newspaper.

I want to use compostable, organic matter that will break down with the poop. So I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for compostable litter box material? Or if anyone has any experience doing this. Anything will help, thanks!

I find that wood pellets or horse pellet bedding or any animal corn/wood pellet bedding, makes a great compostable addition to the bunny poops. The beddign pellets add a good amount of structure and texture to the compost. I use it in my veggie garden.

Straw pellets (sold as bedding for horses) will break down faster than wood pellets, but they’re a little less excellent at absorbing smell. I compost both types. Some of it directly among the berry-bushes, some of it goes in the warm compost with mown grass and autumn leaves etc.

Okay great! Do you get the wood or straw pellets online?

You can find them online, but the shipping is pricey. It’s cheaper to go to a feed store, tractor supply, or other big box store. I haven’t been able to compare the speed of the different pellets at breaking down. I compost slowly… I only empty my compost bins once a year.

I too get them from a feed store and from a hardware store (they sell wood stove pellets). Wood stove pellets can be hard to get during the summer months, but in winter they’re sold in many places. Shipping is pricey because it weighs so much.

Thanks for the advice. I think I’ll check out Dell’s this weekend

Hay and newspaper. I have members of my gardening group pushing each other aside to get my buns litter waste for hot composting. The Lockridge Community Garden currently makes off with everything. A friend who does bunny boarding uses hay and paper pellets, a local gardener has purchased and left an otto bin at her home to be filled and collected. If you use hay it can have a second life in the chook pen where they scratch it up to let the worms through then shovelled into the garden.
