        Hello bunny lovers,

So I think my buns has ear mites…. our dog recently had them and we are still giving him medicine, but unfortunately as hard as I tried I think Faye has gotten them too. She’s constantly shaking her head and scratching at her ears. I’ve been looking in and around her ears and haven’t seen any signs besides the shaking and the itching. I’m wondering what people’s suggestions are for preventive care/ probably have them care and where to buy it at. Is cat medicine okay to use? I read cleaning ears with white vinegar watered down is an okay home remedy since I don’t currently have anything. Also what’s the best strategy holding buns down while trying to clean her ears. She was not a fan of the q-tip ( I was not jamming it in. Just rubbing around the outsides gently).

Any helpful information would be appreciated! I’ve been googling like crazy at what to do but I must be looking in the wrong places ….

Also, she is an inside rabbit and our whole house is carpeting. Is vacuuming the best at trying to suck any up that might be crawling around in the carpet? (Ew).

Revolution would be the best to prevent but also treat if she does have them. With ear mites, sometimes, you only have to give the one dose. Usually it’s the kitten/puppy pack you’d need (depending on how big the rabbit it) but you can split up the ampules if you happen to have cat or dog version.
If it’s mites, Id avoid trying to clean out with anything as Ive read that’s painful. The mites need to be killed beforehand, then the crusts fall off easier. Typically, the beginning of ear mite looks like dark brown spots down in the ear base.

Do NOT use Fipronil (frontline, Sentry and other). It’s deadly toxic to rabbits. It works for cats and dogs, but not for rabbits.

Just saying, so you don’t happen to be sold a pack of fipronil by someone who doesn’t know. This has happened to some people, and it’s really so terribly sad.

Revolution would be the best thing. You can use diatomaceous eath along floorboards and baseboards etc where mites and egg can hide for a long time. Diatomaceous earth is non toxic but dries out mites and fleas etc very effectively. The bunny shouldn’t eat it or directly inhale it.

Where can you get Revolution at, is it just in any pet store? I’m located in the Portland, OR area.

Has anyone heard of Eradimite? Says it works for cats, dogs and rabbits… I found it on Amazon, and it has good reviews. There’s even about 6 or 7 reviews from rabbit owners that said it worked well… I’m only looking for other options because I don’t know where to get Revolution at. It looks like you might need a prescription for it?

You can get Revolution from any vet. I would be very reluctant to try anything but Revolution. That’s the most trusted brand for rabbits. As mentioned, some mite treatments are poisonous to rabbits.

If you cannot get Revolution OTC from a clinic, you’d be better to use oral ivermectin or Moxidectin. The pyrethrin in the Amazon product won’t kill rabbit ear mite. It’s also risky to use on rabbits and can cause some nerve damage.

Could it just be ear wax that is bothering her though?

This page goes into more detail about ear mites and mentions about risk with pyrethrin. Warning; it does contain some pretty horrible images of ear mite cases.

                        Update:

Got Faye into the vet finally. It is ear mites She said it’s a moderate case, but it was good I got her in before it got really bad. She cleaned out her ears and got out the adults that were crawling around and gave me some ear drops that I put in everyday to try and sooth the insides of her ears, and then once a week I give her a dose of Ivermectin orally, I’ll do that for about four weeks and then we’ll go back in and see how her ears look. Fingers crossed. I feel bad for her
