I caught a rabbit outside today. Her foot is broken. I need to take her to the vet or the shelter but I have school… I’m going to try to take her tomorrow. I have no idea how long her leg has been broken for… It’ll need to be amputated.. She hasnt moved much or eaten her hay. I gave her a cucumber and she ate a few slices. She just laid down and I noticed that her belly is really round?? Could she be pregnant? I don’t feel comfortable feeling her belly, she doesn’t like it very much. Is there anything i can do for her until then?

Thank you for taking her in! The poor thing.

Pregnancy is supposed to be pretty hard to detect in a rabbit. Since she has been out on the loose, it’s possible, but also very likely she has a parasitic infection in her gut. What are her droppings looking like?

Her poop looks normal, just a bit wetter than regular house bunnies (shes been eating a lot of grass). She fell asleep and let me touch her belly. I could feel little lumps where her uterus is supposed to be, pretty sure she is. Her belly is droopy too. Poor thing… She’s in a small hamster cage right now. I don’t want her to move around too much. I left the top off and she hasnt moved much, only getting up to look around and then sitting back down.

Any possibility you can help her get a nest started just in case, with fleece blankets or the like?

More often than not, you cant feel the babies. It is very easy to feel gas bubbles though, and given that shes not eating much hay there is a possibility that is what you are feeling instead. It would also cause bloating and make her tummy look round. Of course, you wont know for sure either way until she can be seen by a vet

Thank you for being her hero and taking her in

I’m taking her to the vet tomorrow. I’m not sure what they’ll do with her. They may choose to euthanize her or amputate her leg. Either way, it is better than her suffering outside with a broken leg.

I don’t have a rabbit cage right now, my father threw my old one away. I’m just going to have to keep her in the hamster cage for tonight.

I’m happy to help. Animals are so forgiving. I really hope that they can do something for her. If they cannot and must euthinze her, that is fine with me too. This poor bun did nothing to deserve this. I do have a positive update. She is eating a few of her poops (the ones with vitamins) and started to munch on some hay and cucumber. She does have a very hard time standing, she keeps kicking the hay out from underneath her and it is hard for her to grip the plastic bottom of the cage. I’m happy to see her try to eat, poor thing…

Can you put a towel or blanket down to help her with the grip issue? Shes an adorable bun. I hope the vets are able to help the both of you out (((((good luck vibes)))))

What a sweet looking bunny she is. I hope the vet is able to help her. You did a great thing taking her in!

What a pretty little girl! She looks rather alert and eating cecals (the vitamin poop) is a great sign. I so hope they can help her!

                              Update:
It’s the next day. She did not pee, but she did poop (better than not peeing). Just changed her hay and put a towel underneath. I also gave her another cucumber to keep her hydrated. She moved around when I placed her on the towel while I dumped the old hay.

                              I got a video of her: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zy8lHwYyNWY

I’m glad to see her alert and moving, she was lethargic all day yesterday. I think she is just afraid to jump out of the cage she was in. I’m coming home at 12 to pick her up and we will drop her off at the shelter.

*My dog wanted to sit with the bunny really badly. We had a few rescues in the past and she enjoyed cuddling with them. I didn’t let her this time in case the rabbit injures her leg further.

I’ve just watched the vid and the one of you catching them (or trying to) under the tree – what a shame you didn’t get the other one…. (yet )
Poor leg… poor bun… hope the vet comes up with a solution other than euthanasia.
They are obviously tame buns and were with a human family once…
                                Good luck

I have no idea where her friend went. I believe that he may have abandoned her since she cannot walk anymore. Poor things. There are easily 50 bunnies near my home, all dumped and unwanted. I have no idea how old she is either, probably around 2-5 months. Hopefully she is old enough to get it amputated… I just regret not catching her earlier, or she wouldn’t have broken her poor little foot. At least she is no long outside, it is very cold and rainy outside today. I will take her to my shelter at 12, it is 11 now. I’m hoping that they’ll take her. If we had more space (we live in a townhouse with five people, a dog, and two large fish tanks), I’d keep her myself. My dog has been sitting near the bunny’s cage. She’s really friendly but seems worried as much as I am. I just hope that the rabbit won’t be euthanized, she still has a fighting chance.

Just dropped her off. The lady says that she is definetly a girl (I didn’t want to pick her up, so I never checked). The lady says that she likely pregnant as well, and that she’ll call the vet right away. Before we left, she thanked me so many times for bringing the rabbit in. She even gave us permission to visit her! I’m sure the rabbit will survive, she is a tough bunny with a strong fighting spirit!

Fingers are crossed for her! She must be a tough bunny to have survived this long so I’m sure she will recover quickly!  And don’t feel bad that you were unable to catch her sooner, you did a fantastic job!

Me and my boyfriend tried to catch an escapee that we saw dart across the road – he/she was very obviously domesticated and my bf was convinced the week before that he’d seen that same bunny! So bunny had been running loose for at least a week – we spent hours trying to catch it and in the end it went under a garden fence. Next morning we knocked on the door of the house whose garden the bunny had gone under to tell her there was a stray bun and she literally said “yeah its mine, he got out last week and we can’t catch him” There was no panic or concern in her voice and let me tell you, not ONCE did I see her or anyone trying to catch that poor bun! There are idiots round here that drive fast – we live in a quiet cul-de-sac with cats and people still don’t have the decency to drive slow. On top of that, I’ve seen a fox around here…
