Hi everyone! I introduced a small handful of kale to my bunnies (Woolly and Chewie) yesterday and they loved it

I bought a biggish bag, but was wondering how long it stays ‘fresh’ and safe for bunnies. Is it ok to put it in the fridge for couple of days, or is that a big no no?

Kale should be refrigerated. Did this bag have a date on it? Although you can’t always go by the dates. I’ve had greens to last past their date and others to go bad before their date. Whenever I buy bagged spring mix, I make sure that the date on the bag is at least 5 days away. But I still have to pick through it and discard any bad pieces. I find if the prewashed bagged produce is too wet, that it goes bad quicker. I have had fresh bundles of kale to last over a week. I prefer the fresh bundles over the bagged kale. It really depends on how fresh it was when you bought it.

I refrigerate all my veggies (except herbs like basil). It’s perfectly fine.

Generally, if veg is fresh enough for me to eat I’ll feed it to Alfred. In fact I almost always munch on the salads I prepare for him, so I have to make extra : )

I think it’ll be fine in the fridge for the two or three days, I’d check the date on the package to make sure

Kale withstands cold excellently. It can even freeze – in fact they don’t harvest it here until there’s been a few nights’ good frost. Kale is easy to detemine the freshness of. The leaves turn yellow when they go off. I don’t think the yellowing leaves are actually harmful to feed, but they won’t have much nutritional value. Of only the very edges have started to go yellow, you can cut those off and feed the rest.

If the leaves are only wilted – meaning a bit soft, you can put them in cold or ice water for an hour or so like you do with lettuce to make it crispy.

If you have to buy large quantities of kale that you absolutely can’t use fresh, you can chop the leaves up in big bits and dry them on very low heat in the oven and use as a hay topper or treat.
