        Hello All!

I’ve recently adopted a new rabbit, Rosie. Today when she was binkying around, I noticed something particular about her droppings. Upon closer examination, there was a small “worm-like” thing on her poo.

I called the vet immediately and she’s booked in for tomorrow under the suspicion that she has worms.

Can anyone provide advice? I have two rabbits, but they’re not in the same cage as they aren’t bonded (yet). No bonding has been done as Rosie isn’t old enough to be spayed.

I think the chance of your second rabbit having worms will be unlikely if they haven’t been together, however I would recommend asking for enough treatment for both anyway just in case. I believe worms on rabbit poop can dry up very quickly so are often only noticeable very shortly after pooping, but you could collect some poop anyway to take with to the vet and they may be able to see under a microscope.

I had a mum and daughter treated for pin worms once. It was actually the daughter that I noticed it in even though she had never been outdoors. I think the mum must have passed them on to her. They were both treated with panacur.

Did either of your rabbits feel ill or not eat as much? I am a bit worried about the effects of the medication. My vet prescribed fenbendazole.

It was about 4 years ago now, so I don’t remember. Fenbendazole is panacur. It is not uncommon for rabbits to be not be feeling 100% right when on this. When the parasites die off, toxins are released so their bodies are dealing with that initially. I think the first few days is the worst, from memory. As long as they are eating some, they should be okay. Hopefully you’ll see a turn around in appetite soon.
They might be feeling the after effects of having been to the vet also.
