I am a new rabbit owner and I adopted my bunny from a friend who no longer wanted her rabbit. She said my bunny was litter trained, but as soon as I brought her home she pooped everywhere. I cleaned her litter box every week, but she just doesn’t use it. She pees in it, but poo is everywhere. In and out of her litter box. She can comfortably sit in the litter box and all I know is that she is a dwarf. Please help me.

Pooping in a new house may be because she is marking her new territory. It’s very good that she is peeing in her litter box, and it may be that she will settle down soon and start pooping in it too. Does she have free reign in your house or part of your house, and is that where she is pooping? Or is she mostly confined to a cage and she is pooping in there? The reason I asked was to say that you shouldn’t have any bedding or litter anywhere in the cage except in the litter box. If litter is on the floor of the cage, that can confuse them. You didn’t say if she is spayed or not. It can be difficult to fully litter box train a rabbit who isn’t spayed or neutered. Put the stray poops back in her litter box, to show her that’s where they belong. A litter box really should be cleaned out more than once a week. The wet litter should be removed at least every two or three days. A lot of people clean the wet area out daily.

My girl did they same thing when we got her. It took about 2-3 months, but she is now litter trained (well kinda, she usually refuses to use the litter box, but goes in her cage). She occasionally starts again a bit if we clean the carpet. Although everyone says to scoop the poop and put it in the litter box, I found that this didn’t work with her. What worked was leaving at least some of it for a bit until she was satisfied that her scent was there.

However, your rabbit might be quicker since mine was put in another rabbit’s territory. On the other hand, if she isn’t spayed, it might be never. My boy would always leave poops around his cage for years until he was neutered.

It could be her marking her territory and I agree that you should change her litter box more than once a week! My bunnies are fantastic at peeing in their litter boxes but they poop absolutely everywhere. I clean the litter trays every day or every other day. And they’ll be neutered and spayed in the next couple of weeks so hopefully it will get better. As for now I’m putting stray poops in their boxes but it doesn’t seem to be helping either. I suppose patience is key if it’s territory marking. Is she spayed?
