So as you may know, I have two bunnies – a male and female, both siblings. They’re 15 weeks old now, and I have finally separated them.  I know, I know, I should have separated them a few weeks back but I was worried that doing so would break the strong bond that they have? I don’t know what I was thinking. I have finally seen the light though and realised I need to put their health first. More specifically I need to put the health of my sweet girl, which means taking NO unnecessary pregnancy risks. I don’t think she is pregnant – there are no signs whatsoever although I may take her to have an ultrasound just to clarify. If she is, it’s completely my fault and I couldn’t forgive myself for putting her through that. Anyway, I have explained my situation to my vets and they are happy to operate when she is 16 weeks old – so a week tomorrow she will be spayed. Til then, the bunnies will be allowed play time together completely supervised. When I have to run errands, they’ll have to go in their separate hutches. I only have one pen at the moment, although another is on order so they’ll have a little more space when they are having alone time.

I just feel…awful. I should have taken precautions before instead of just thinking “everything will be fine” But I’m relieved she is being spayed in a week though so they haven’t got to be separated for too long!

It’s okay. What’s important is that you’re fixing it, and with all luck it will be fine.

Rabbits can still breed through the bars so sadly you arnt really in the clear for pregnancies until they each have their own pens…

Oh no don’t worry, until we have the 2nd pen, they’ll be confined to their own hutches when I’m not here to supervise. They can see one another from their hutches but there’s a good 2 ft between them so no breeding through bars When the pens are set up, we’ll make sure there’s a gap between them too.

Buttercup has an appointment at the vets later today to give her a check up. They are playing together now (I’m watching them as I’m typing!) and they are running and binky-ing. They were so happy his morning to see each other.  When I let Buttercup out, she ran straight to Peanuts hutch

Are you getting the male neutered too? After Buttercup has been spayed, there will be no chance of pregnancy, of course, but it will be pretty much impossible to fully bond your rabbits if the male hasn’t been neutered. He will likely want to hump her all the time, which can make her mad and lead to fighting – which leads to injuries. He also may start spraying or having aggressive tendencies if he isn’t neutered. It would be a good idea to have their surgeries performed around the same time. Then you have to wait a month at least for the hormones to settle down before you can start the permanent bonding.

Buttercup has come back from the vets. I thought they were going to ultrasound her but apparently I have to book that separately? (I thought I had lol) Anyway, the vet gave her tummy a good feel, and said he cannot feel a thing aside from little poops (she never peed or pooped in her carrier but she did as soon as we got home, she went straight to the litter box and looked like she was raising her tail to pee and I felt some warm poops after she hopped out so it was definitely her lol) so if she is pregnant, it is very very early days. And she will be spayed next week as planned. Crisis diverted. I will never be so irresponsible again. I can’t imagine having more rabbits in the future (I love these ones too much!) But if I do, I will separate them at a younger age. I just didn’t think I needed to split them as neither is showing signs of sexual maturity but ah well, lesson learned.

I feel like the worst bunny Mum ever – I let my buns have SUPERVISED play time together yesterday evening, took my eyes off them for s split second to grab the drink behind me and I can’t be sure but I think I saw Peanut try to mount Buttercup and then she ran away. No more play time together now, until after surgeries are done! Ugh I feel terrible
