For whatever reason, my nethie Bombur gets very skittish and nervous in the beginning of the colder season. It first happened last year, and its starting to happen again this year. Maybe its because he goes through a large shedding at the start of the season?

He will get so nervous about everything that it will start fights between him and his bond mate, but only in the living room (their free roam space). While they are in the cage together, hes perfectly fine and not scared at all. But as soon as he leaves the cage to free roam (he gets out on his own, willingly), his eyes will bug out, he will flatten himself to the ground then dash to the nearest hiding spot with his eyes popping out until he feels safe enough(?) to run back into the cage. I have no idea why. There has been many times where during one of his frightened dashes to one of his hiding spots, he runs into or runs over Blue (his bond mate) and it starts a short lived chase because Blue doesnt understand why Bombur flew into him like that. If its going to be like last year, about a week after hes fully done with his shedding he will calm down and go back to normal while free roaming

Is this normal, or is something possibly wrong? I know some buns get weird during a shed, but he doesnt act like this at all during his huge shedding in the summer, where he sheds 5x as much as he does for his winter shed

Do you get mice occasionally? That’s the only thing I can think of that would change as the weather gets cooler. The little critters can seek out the warmer environs of a house.

Or more animals approach the house. Maybe he can sense that?

What about your heating? Are you using that more? Does it make some noises that might make him skittish?

Nope, our apartment is inspected for mice and bugs every month or so, so everythings always pest free. Our heater does make noise, but we havent had ours on yet this year. However, the family below us blasts there (it could be 30 outside and theyll blast theirs so high that our apartment is a nice 70). The family below us’s heater is right below our bunnies. Could they be hearing that, you think?

Possibly! You’d probably have to take note when they are away from home and see how he acts then. Or does their heating come on automatically?

Nope, only when they are home I will start keeping tabs on when they are and are not home and see if their heater is whats bothering my Bombur. Thank you for the help!

Henry thinks the world is coming to an end when my fridge kicks in and starts bubbling and hissing…
He stops everything, sits up, sometimes thumps and checks everyone is OK !! LOL – It took a while realising what it was that was bothering him.. I don’t hear it anymore…
