So this morning when I went to put the buns up before I left for work I noticed a small puddle of what looks like either diarrhea or brownish urine. both buns had been out and playing and raced to the food bowl as usual when I fed them. it was about the size of an oreo cookie or half dollar coin. it was just that spot with a little on one of their blankets but not a lot. I don’t know when it happened, other than it wasn’t there when we went to bed last night. this morning when I got up they greeted me at the front of the cage waiting for me to let them out as usual.

I called our vet who said since I couldn’t tell what it was (leaning more towards diarrhea) and that it was just that one puddle as long as they were eating and drinking and acting well I should just continue to watch them. Of course I can’t call out of work today. my mom is going to check on them for me while I’m at work and I’m going to run home at lunch time and make sure they eat again before I leave and that they seem normal. I don’t know which one it came from – mr Bun had some on his foot but it wasn’t near his bottom it looked more like he stepped in it so I cant say for sure that its him who had the problem. I’m freaking out because I cant be home with them all day. I don’t have any critical care but can mash some pellets if needed. the good thing is they were just as excited over breakfast as they usually are so they have both eaten this morning.

is there something I should be doing or giving them? I’m hoping there’s no more but my mom will call me if there is and I’ll just have to leave work and take them both to the vet. they don’t have any openings today but if I have to I will just take them and sit in the waiting room until they agree to see them.  this is the first time I’ve ever had a possible sick bunny and I’ve cried all morning over it. of course they both cocked their heads at me  and looked at me like I was being silly with all my crying and telling them I love them over and over again

Here is the guide to bunny poop – http://imgur.com/a/5N4lD. It shows diarrhea near the bottom of the page. Rabbits can have reddish urine at times, due to eating certain things. It might appear more brownish than red. If they are eating normally, there is no reason to feed Critical Care or a pellet mash. If you see it again and determine that it is diarrhea, then the vet will probably want to perform a fecal test on it. Since you have more than one rabbit, the vet would likely want to test all of their fecal samples.

It could be “poop juice”. Not nice, but not an emergency if the buns are still eating and acting normal. If there are round poops as well, it’s not diarrhea. True diarrhea means there is only runny poop, often with mucus in it.
Hay is the best food for things like these, so try to encourage hay-eating.

Okay guys. I’ve just come home to check on them. There are a few more spots mostly on the blanket but no more actual puddles. And after looking at the blanket it appears more urine like than diarrhea like and definitely not mucus-y So that’s good right? What would cause red/brown urine? And what can I do? Do they need to be rushed to the vet? The spots kind of look dribble-ish which is what makes me think UTI

Reddish-brown urine can be.caused by plant pigments. Bunny pee can come in many colors, all normal.

Keep keeping an eye. If it’s a UTI you can sometimes see the bunny straining to pee.

thanks bam! I think it may be daisy, she seemed to be going to the litter box more than usual but I watched her pee when in got home and she didn’t look like she was straining. I’ll keep an eye on them both. is there anything I should watch for other than straining and decrease in appetite? and should it persist? they haven’t had anything out of the ordinary in the last couple days and I won’t be giving them any treats for a few days. If it stays this color does she need to see the vet?

So I called our vet and decided to make her an appointment Friday just to check her over. it will make me feel better especially since the only emergency vet around here doesn’t take rabbits and If she were to have a problem over the weekend I wouldn’t know what to do.

on a very weird note- I just read an article in the house rabbit society that said some rabbits will experience this red/brown urine at the first cold snap of the season. which coincidentally for us was yesterday! it also said this is more common in unspayed females (hello daisy!) so I’m feeling a little less stressed. the vet said the only thing that would need an emergency trip now is if her belly becomes bloated as that would me she has a blockage and is becoming backed up with urine. I’ve heard parsley is good for flushing out urine, would that be good to give her tonight? but she doesn’t have it often (one or two times before) so maybe a fairly new food isn’t a good idea right now??

You can give a little parsley. It does help flush out urine.

It’s true that bunny pee can become red spontaneously, i.e. without the bunny having eaten something that has red pigments in it. It’s perfectly normal.

I’m glad you’re feeling less worried It doesn’t sound like you have cause for worry. Just keep an eye.

We just got back from the vet. Daisy isn’t very happy with me, she had to get an xray. the vet just wanted to make sure she didn’t have sludge or a stone. the vet would have liked to get a urine sample just because I’m still seeing puddles of very opaque red/brown urine but daisy didn’t have enough urine in her bladder. Since she’s still eating and drinking and acting normally the vet didn’t feel it was necessary to keep her and go through more just to get a sample. they sent her home on UTI meds a 2 day anti inflammatory and 10 day baytril. she said to make sure she’s drinking plenty and not eating anything out of the ordinary until she finishes the baytril. From what I’ve read and what the vet said I’m glad UTI’s are fairly common and easy to treat. Poor daisy hates it when she can’t make it to the litter box- she sits forever cleaning herself back up. on the bright side while we were at the vet’s MrBun decided to pee in the carrier just to show us his pee is fine! this was the first time I’ve had a sick bunny scare and I’m super thankful she’s not really sick!!

So daisy is still on antibiotics- still seeing red urine but it hasn’t even been a week so I’m not worried about that just yet. but of course she is now in her monthly nesting phase. I was just wondering- is there a line between normal fur pulling and red flag fur pulling? I always thought they just pulled from the dewlap but she pulls from all over. but since I’ve read that fur pulling can indicate illness I just want to make sure I can tell the difference between normal and abnormal. the UTI and abx shouldn’t have an effect on that should it?

Oh and by the way- if you’ve never seen a nesting bunny spit out the HUGE ball of fur she was hiding in her mouth when you offer her a treat ITS WAY COOL. but whats not cool is when she tries to nest in your bed and you have to wash everything because she’s really good at it.

Sorry I saw this thread so late, but your last post cracked me up.
I know how freaky it can be to not know whether to worry about a bun’s health. Glad little miss Daisy got a good prognosis, though Wishing her good wees from here on in (((Daisy bunbun)))

Okay guys- this is a photo from the first day we had the issue. Daisy finished her meds about a week ago. Well the past couple days I noticed a few places of “strongly” colored pee as in slightly dark but still not cloudy or anything so I didn’t think much of it. this morning there was another spot almost identical to this one. What do you guys think? Does she need to go back to the vet? She has never shown any signs of change in behavior or eating or pottying habits. nothing abnormal or new in her diet. i can’t really afford an unnecessary vet visit right now but would figure it out if you guys think she needs to go. is this a normal coloration  for pee?

we do give them a  tablespoon or so of this split between their two bowls at breakfast time. other than that they get 1/4 cup timothy hay pellets in each bowl twice a day and unlimited hay and water. Should we cut this treat out?
