I recently moved my rabbit indoors. Well, I try my best to let her out of her cage to play at least an hour a day, usually more. She likes to go under my  bed and chew on everything and when I block it off she gets mad. Well, I solved that problem by taking everything out that she could hurt by chewing on.

But something that bothers me is when I have to put her back (I usuallly try to let her get tired, and then she’ll get hungry and go back to eat or get a drink of water and I shut the cage, then she doesn’t mind), she’ll chew on her cage, usually. Will this behavior calm down after she’s spayed, do you think?

Also, her cage is 9 sq. feet.

You should be letting your rabbit out of its cage at least 5-8 hours a day. The cage is also too small for the rabbit to be in for large periods of time. Your rabbit’s behavior is easily explained by the fact that it isn’t getting enough exercise.

Her cage is 9 square feet? The minimum for a house rabbit should be 12 square feet. She probably wants more time outside of the pen, and she’s tired of being in a small area.

That being said, I do think it will get better once she is spayed. But be forewarned… my bun is spayed, and she still does this in a 16-18 sq foot pen. She chews on the pen when she wants to get out and play. She gets about 4-5 hours a day outside of her pen, but she clearly wants more. So make sure your bun gets enough time outside of her pen, AT LEAST 5 hours a day.

She’s only let out for about an hour a day? Can you get a pen for her so she can have more time out to play? She doesn’t sound mischievous , just bored. More play time would probably give drastic results. My bunnies are only confined to their pen and hutch overnight, they free roam for over 12 hours a day

No, she’s usually let out for about 3 hours a day. Just on some days when I have to leave for work extra early or something she doesn’t get to come out for her morning playtime.

I still think having more play time would help, 3 hours really isn’t long enough – that would mean 3 hours out and 21 hours a day stuck in her cage.

She needs more play time and a bigger cage, or a pen attached to her cage

Agree with the others, and one extra tip: rabbits are easily trained with food. We trained our bun with a voice command to go back into his cage.

There are certain rabbit treats which he really loves, and we put them on a shelf near the cage. When we wanted him to jump into the cage we rattled the bag a bit, and gave him a small bit of a treat every time he hopped into his cage after hearing the bag open. As soon as he associated that with going into the cage, we started adding the voice command “Breintje, hokje!” (Dutch for: name of our bun, cage!) in a cheery voice. He soon got the hang of that too, and nowadays we only have to use the voice command to get him into his cage. It works from anywhere in the living room, and it also works if friends say those words. Worked like a charm ever since, provided he still gets a piece of a treat though

I don’t have enough space in my room to add a pen. I’m going to be making a bunny condo in the next month or so, I’ve bought some of the supplies, just have to build it and get the wood for the floor. I let her out for an extra hour last night, honestly it’s hard because I have to stay in my room and supervise her, because of carpet. She doesn’t chew it too much, but if she did chew a big patch my parents would not be happy. That being said, I want to be able to leave her in my room while I go to other parts of the house, because it’s hard for me to stay in my room for 2 hours straight. But I did let her stay out an extra hour last night and she didn’t chew on her cage at all, because I think she was too tired and hungry to bother
