I noticed the sclera (white part of eye) of my bunny’s eyes is blue. I also noticed his nails look blue. He has been eating fine and his output is perfect. However, he does tend to drink an excessive amount of water and urinates about 5x in an hour. His hind legs and genital region is always soaked with urine even though I pat him dry with a paper towel almost 3x a day. I have somewhat helped this issue by lining his litter with a towel instead of newspaper which is what I line my other bunnies’ litter with. I recently noticed he is missing a little bit of hair above his genital region. His diet is about 95% Oxbow hay and rarely eats Oxbow pellets because he tends to bloat very easily. He is an indoor bunny and has free access in my bedroom. I have never seen him eat the paint of my walls. He does tend to pull at the carpet. He is very bony and is probably around 2 months old. If anyone has seen symptoms like this before please let me know. He has an appointment with the vet tomorrow but, I thought I would reach out to anyone in the bunny community that has experienced something like this. I think it is obvious he is anemic but why? I will provide photos below.

        Blue/grey/black tint to sclera….anemia?

Blue nail…sorry for the bad photo quality

Missing fur above genitals and skin looks irritated and red (fur is slightly wet from cleaning him with a wet towel which is when I noticed the missing fur, the blue nails, & blue eye)

It could be that he has parasites – your vet should deworm him just in case regardless…
The missing fur is most likely due to urine scalding (the ammonia burns his skin due to soaking). A bum bath in an inch of plain lukewarm water and thorough drying followed by diaper rash cream can really help. But the cause of the problem could be a UTI so your vet may need to consider that as well.
What kind of litter are you using on top of the towel? I find that putting some rejected hay (the bits my bun refuses to eat after he’s picked out all the yummy bits) on top of my paper litter that’s on top of the newspaper really helps prevent prolonged contact with urine-soaked litter.
Changing his box more frequently or getting a litter screen (see the BB store) can also help a lot.
Let us know how it goes at the vets. (((bunbun)))

Poor little guy. A bony bunny is not a healthy bunny. Internal parasites could be at play as suggested, I’d also get him checked out for a urinary tract infection.

Some bunnies don’t maintain weight very well on just a hay diet, so if there’s no other underlying cause, your vet may suggest adding more pellets to his diet. If he reacts badly to oxbow, I’d try another brand. Pellets can be good for weight maintenance.

Wishing him the best, let us know what the vet says

              Hello,
Thank you so much for responding. So, I ended up bringing my baby bun to the ER because after further examination, we found an abscess in his gums. The ER vet performed an X-ray of his body and head but found nothing abnormal. He wasn’t not sure if he was suffering from low oxygen because his lips and tongue are pink. Unfortunately, the place I went to was unable to do blood work maybe because it’s 2am here. Anyways, Hamtaro has an appt with the primary vet around 9:00. We are hoping to do blood work and further investigate this mystery illness that he has.

                  Hi everyone,
It breaks my heart to say this but, my little Hamtaro did not make it. We left the ER around 4am only to bring him back at 7am but this time we were transferred to a hospital with an exotic pet specialist. Unfortunately, Hamtaro suffered about 4 seizures on our way to the hospital but he kept fighting hard to keep going. Once he was at the ER, the vet specialist was able to to stop the seizures but told us that he would most likely not survive. We made the decision to have him euthanized and when we saw him for the last time he was having agonal breaths. Thank you all for replying to my post. I will post the results of the necroscopy when I receive them.
