Thumper is settling in very nicely, we are all so in love and she’s such a joy. I was pondering that maybe in the future I will get her a friend. But how much more work is it. Is it a bad idea?

I guess it depends how much work you feel one bunny is. We have a pair and as far as cleaning, it’s not a huge increase as long as they both use the litter. The only issues we’ve ever run into is dominance issues. They’ve only had to be separated once, but I think they were still in the process of bonding. We kept their cages side by side so they could still see each other and they’d sleep “next” to one another in their separate cages. Another thing to consider is if one gets sick, the other might as well.

Our buns do seem happy in general to have companionship though. They cuddle quite a bit and seem a little lost when one has to go for a vet visit or wanders from the other to hang out with the humans during outside time. I don’t feel like they’re too much, but it helps that they’re the sweetest rabbits I’ve ever had.

It doesnt so much matter if you want a second bunny, it matters more if she wants a second bunny There have been many posts here from people who thought their bunny needed a friend only to have bonding fail because their bunny never actually wanted a friend, which leaves them with two single bunnies. Of course, there are also posts where bunnies love their new friends after some good bonding. But its all up to your bun and if she wants another friend, because if she does not, then you will be stuck with two single bunnies who need their own territories

Double the work if they’re 2 x single buns (some days it feels triple the work !)
Double the cost if they are bonded or not.
              Double the worry
Double the time needed for cuddle time.

              … but….

              Double the joy
              Double the love
              Double the cuddles

Would I know if my bunny wants a friend or not?

Day to day I suppose it depends on whether the two would be ‘housed together’ or whether they’ll have separate housing because if they are housed together, the only ‘extra’ would be possibly extra litter and of course extra hay and food. Maybe a few extra toys or accessories. However if they are housed separately, everything you do for Thumper already (cleaning out the hutch for example) you’d need to do twice over. Then theres vet bills and pet insurance to think about.

Saying that though, I have two bunnies and I can’t imagine the work load would be halved if I had just one but mine are kept together.

Now they are bonded, I don’t find having two buns much more work. It is a whole lot more expensive and two buns even if bonded take up a lot more room than one did.

However bonding buns can be a lot of hard work, I got really lucky but not everyone does and some buns just wont accept their new friend at all and you would need to house them separately.

I agree that it depends if they are bonded or not. Vienna is right that two unbonded bunnies is going to be double the work. And you will have to go through this stage when getting a new rabbit, and there’s a chance they may not even bond.

When bonded, it’s only a little extra work tidying up after them, more fur and hay everywhere, more frequent litter changes, but otherwise you’re still doing the same things you would have been doing just with one bun. Of course as mentioned the cost is higher too.

Maybe I’ll just keep the one,she can just be our spoiled only child?
