        Hey,

Patch was castrated on Friday.  I had to take him to the emergency vets on Sunday as he wasn’t eating very much and wasn’t passing faeces.  He was also quite swollen and bruised.  He was given a few injections, given oral meds for me to administer at home every 12 hours (antibiotics and gut stimulant). I have been to the vets every night since, and he has had injectable pain relief.  His eating has improved and his droppings are finally getting to a better size and shape, however he now has an infection and an abscess forming.  I am struggling giving him the oral meds.  He was an adoption rabbit and was a bit skittish and aggressive to begin with and he grunts and is trying to bite me every time I try to give him the meds and it is stressing him out so much.  He was so much calmer in the vets! I am thinking I may just get an antibiotic jab at the vets everyday instead.  Has anyone experienced this?

        Thanks, Sarah x

Will he not take the meds wrapped up in a banana ball or mixed in with juice ?

I haven’t tried anything like that yet. He really likes his Fibreplex! So I just gave him some of that and then shot the meds in after. Seemed to take them OK. Thank god for palatable meds!

He is now snubbing the fibreplex and I have tried mushing the meds up with banana to no avail. All he will eat at the moment is hay which doesn’t help when trying to give meds. Any ideas???

It’s great that he’s eating hay.. Can you get someone to help you give him the antibiotics by syringe? Sometimes a bunny will eat meds mixed with baby fruit- or berry puree. It’s not always working though. I’ve never been able to give any med except by syringe, with the bun in a burrito.

Injections can be given if he absolutely refuses.

What antibiotic ? Enrotril and Baytril taste nasty to buns, your best bet is to syringe it straight in his mouth and give him a sweet treat after.

Baytril. I try every day to syringe it into his mouth but I can’t keep hold of him, even wrapped in a towel bunny burrito style. He just goes crazy
