I noticed one of Bun’s dew claws was sticking out at a weird angle. As soon as I touched it to look closer it fell off. There was no blood or anything and she’s not showing any signs of pain or discomfort, in fact, she flopped immediately after. I trim her claws every month so it couldn’t have been because it was too long. So a few question. Why would this happen? Is there anything I should do for it? Will it grow back?
Just really confused and a little freaked out and worried.

Happened to my little nethie a few days ago! I posted about it as well and was told by the wonderful people here that its pretty normal/common for nails to come off. The nail may or may not come back but it shouldnt effect your bunny either way

Okay thank you. I had a look through your post and I’m just really confused why my Bun didn’t bleed at all or anything.
Even though she’s not bleeding, should I still take measures to make sure no infection sets in or anything?

She finally let me get a good look at it and it kind of looks like the quick is exposed but not broken. As though the nail broke off from around the quick. Should I be doing anything to protect the quick

The nail could have been caught earlier and didn’t get torn off, but the root was damaged. This will cause the nail to “die” and the quick to recede. It’s just like when a person smashes their finger and their finger nail becomes discolored and falls off later when a new nail is growing in. You didn’t see blood on your bun because his nail falling off just now may not have been the initial injury. Another member had this happen recently as well.

I would watch it for infection just to be sure, but i dont think you have to if your bunny isnt showing signs of pain or discomfort. I called my vet to ask when it happened to my bunny and they said it should be fine and not to worry much at all about it
