Probably a stupid question but I’d rather ask than make a silly mistake!  I have read that bunnies can have fruit a couple of times per week, as a treat and me and my partner usually have frozen fruit on hand as it is cheaper and lasts longer. Anyway, provided the fruits are thoroughly thawed out, are they okay ? I’m thinking strawberries, raspberries and blueberries in particular . Thanks guys, sorry for asking something silly !

Edited: Oops I posted this in the wrong section, so sorry, can someone move it please? I’m sorry for the hassle.

I will move this to Diet & Care.

I don’t really see why they couldn’t have small bits of frozen fruit. I used to give my Olivia little bites of all-fruit ice bars.

Yes, perfectly safe in small treat amounts.

Excellent, thank you guys! I have another query – I’ve noticed that my bunnies don’t eat as much hay as guidelines suggest they should. Perhaps I’m giving them too much pellet food? I usually give about 3 tablespoons each morning. Should I cut way back?

Mine only get 2 tablespoons each per day (1 in the morning, 1 at night) but they still eat plenty of hay, so 3 tablespoons should be fine. Although it does depend how big your bunny is. If you have a tiny netherland dwarf, you would probably be safe to cut back a little.

I’ve got 3 month old mini lops so they’re pretty small, less than 1kg in weight a couple of weeks ago, probably closer to a kilo each now. What do you think? They seem to like the hay, they just don’t have enough of it.

The house rabbit society advises bunnies under 7 months be given unlimited pellets, so i probably wouldn’t reduce their pellets. Is it 3 tbs each or combined? What guidelines are you looking at when you say they don’t eat enough hay? Personally I find it hard to tell how much hay my bun eats, for reasons to do with the way I feed it, and the way he eats it. So I kinda go by poop ; ). And I don’t worry too much because he seems to like hay and spends quite a bit of time eating it.

Roughly 3tbs for the pair of them, Buttercup eats a little more but in theory they have 1 and a half tbs each. Whenever I’ve looked online , I’ve always read that they should eat a bale of hay the size of their body but they don’t have anywhere near that amount. Fortunately I’ve discovered it was/is their hay rack hindering the eating, since putting hay in their litter trays  (until I can get a better rack) they’ve eaten more

As Azerane says, that is a sufficient amount for adults, but I don’t know about 3 month Olds.  Here is a link to the HRS page that recommends unlimited pellets for young buns –  http://rabbit.org/faq-diet/. I don’t think completely unlimited pellets is really necessary, but one and a half tablespoons for young buns seems like not much. Don’t take my word for it though, there are people with much more experience and knowledge than I have  that will hopefully volunteer their opinions. And if they don’t I recommend starting a new thread on the subject. I would be interested in any responses myself, as my bun is 5 months old. He has been eating about a third of a cup of pellets since we got him at 3 months.

Thank you for your response. I’m certain now that it wasn’t the amount of pellets that were stopping my buns from eating hay (it was hay rack issues) so I’ll go back up to a couple of tablespoons each and if they are still eating plenty of hay, I’ll increase the pellets a little more. Thanks everybody !

I’m glad you’ve figured it out, and hopefully with the hay rack changes they’ll eat more hay
