Hi! I’ve been on this forum before but I lost my password and my email password so I had to make a new account.

I’ve been trying to rescue as many rabbits as possible and bringing them inside. Needless to say, I am pretty experienced with rabbits (owned one in the past), so I do know the basics and the behaviours of rabbits.

However, my father threw away my storage grids I used for my rabbit’s cage and it’: been pretty difficult trying to catch them. Unfortunately I won’t even be able to replace it

I’m looking for tips on capturing them more efficiently. I won’t be keeping them, they will be going to my local shelter! Some rabbits in my area are pretty brave and let me sit beside them.

So far, I’ve caught 3. What would attract them? I tried apples but some rabbits don’t seem to enjoy it… I try to bring celery and cucumber for water, some sort of lettuce or kale, and some carrots. I also have some oats (not much smell though). Banana is a good one, but I’ve also met a few rabbits who doesn’t like banana.

I’ve tried netting as well, but most are afraid of the net (as expected). I try to bond with them a bit, so that they let me pet them. I usually have a small hamster cage ready, and when they are calm, I scoop them up and put them into the cage. I’ve found most sucess with this, but it does scare me a little because I hate picking them up. Are there any other methods people use that are quite sucessful?

Anyway, any tips, advice, or feedback will be greatly appreciated !

This is the previous rabbit I rescued, he was such a sweetheart

Also, if people can suggest some bait I can use, that’d be great. What is your rabbit’s favourite treat?

Besides the foods you mentioned, I would try cilantro. It’s strongly scented and many rabbits love it, so it would be enticing to them. It does wilt quickly, though, so you would have to keep it in a cooler and bring it out as you are trying to rescue the rabbits.  There is one brand of rabbit treat that I sometimes give my rabbits, that is very aromatic and enticing (I’ve been tempted to take a bite).  They are the SMAKS treats, sold here and other places.  I usually get mine from drsfostersmith.com.  I currently have the pumpkin treats and they smell so good, like a cinnamon cookie.

I’ve been involved in a roundup and it’s good if you have some people to help – to move and corral the rabbit up against a building or into a garage or someplace where it wouldn’t be able to escape as easily, or to encircle it.. You never chase one, of course, just slowly and steadily move toward it. You can, and you already have had luck catching rabbits one on one, but if you have some people to help you, you can try that and see if you have better success. There are some instances when a single person might have better luck catching a rabbit, building its trust, but there are the other times when multiple people will stand a better chance.

It is good to have a small section of the wire grids to help corral the rabbit and to block off escape, but maybe you could use a piece of cardboard from a large box or a blanket or large towel to help with corralling the rabbit. You of course do need to have a carrier or small cage at hand to get the rabbit into as quickly as possible, before it might struggle and get away.

It’s wonderful that you are saving these rabbits. I hope that you have good luck with your future rescues.
