My New Zealand, Daisy, has just very recently (like within an hour or two) produced some concerning… poops? I’m not sure if this is bunny diarrhea. She is somewhere between 8 and 9 months old, and this has never happened before. Our other rabbit, Ruby, in the pen next to her, is completely unaffected. I haven’t seen anything in either of their litter boxes regarding this.

I see three “spots” it’s occurred in (sorry for bad pictures), each with little drops or other lighter spots next to it, probably indicating that it was indeed liquid, ew.

She is behaving normally. She’s eating hay and drinking and throwing her toys around as usual so I admit I’m not as worried as I think I should be. She still comes up to me for pets when I open the door. There is nothing wrong with her behavior at all.

So please, give me the good, the bad, and the ugly. I haven’t seen any more spots but will be keeping a close eye on her. I do not believe I have an emergency rabbit vet in my area.

It looks a bit like what I call “cecal juice”, Charming, I know. My NZ White Cross leaves these a bit. Another rabbit just leaves the brown spot. Other friends Ive talked to said some of their rabbits do also. Do you see her reach down to eat her cecal droppings or does she turn around and eat them off the floor?

If it’s the first time you’re seeing this, you may need to fine tune her diet a little. Limit starchy carbs, sugar etc.

Thanks! I’m always entranced by how pretty she is

And thank you. I feel like a giant weight has been taken off my shoulders. After looking up some pictures of rabbit diarrhea (ugh) it definitely didn’t look like that, but I couldn’t be sure. It’s good to know this isn’t as abnormal as I thought. I’ve never seen her produce cecals, so this is definitely a first.

Also, both bunnies are currently just eating their hay and pellets. We’ve tried introducing veggies but they hate everything we’ve tried. Not sure what I can limit, if anything, at this point.

Hate everything as in totally ignore it? I have one rabbit who use to eat greens when she was younger. Then she just lost interest. She has taken to eating a little more of them now that I’ve been reducing the pellets. She’s still fussy and hangs out for the food she really wants, but at least she’s trying some again.

My bunny had quite the case of “ceacal drops” a few weeks ago. Looked like diarrhea, liquid brown, but only once a day. If it was anytime he pooped, I would have called it intestinal diarrhea. Because it was only a night, it had to have been from the cecum. Then I remembered that he had gotten hold of a blackberry a day or so before… dark fruit play havoc with his belly. So I gave him benebac, problem solved.

I’m pretty sure it’s Luna that makes a mess of the upstairs fleece in their cage with the cecal juice I was worried about it at first since Bandit never used to leave anything like that, but she seems very healthy otherwise. Some nights there’s none, others there’s a few spots. Fortunately it washing out well

Thanks, everyone! First time owner here, haha, and I just found it a bit concerning. I thought maybe it was something we gave her on accident and didn’t realize it.

Question, though… How exactly does one wash this out? It looks pretty annoying to deal with.

And yes to jerseygirl. They more or less ignore every veggie we introduce to them. One of them (I think it was Daisy) ate a few apple pieces but other than that they just snub everything. The two don’t get along but it seems they agree on this boycott lol.

Hmm, my pair are on fleece so it just comes out in the wash, however I think spraying with a vinegar/water solution, letting it sit for a few minutes then dabbing it up should work. I wouldn’t rub it because it might spread.
