        Hi Guys!

Muffin has a wooden house in her cage and she absolutely loves it and since theres a new puppy in the house now too i like to have it in her cage so if she gets scared by the pup she can hide and go somewhere she feels safe. The only problem is when she sits on top of the house she can reach the top of the cage (our cage opens from the top which is rounded – see photo) she tends to bite the bars on the cage an awful lot but she isnt just nibbling she grips her teeth round the bars then pulls at it (you can hear the noise she makes from the other end of the house) she has been doing this since i bought the house although she did stop doing it for a few months but then started again. It isnt because shes bored or hungry because she has plenty of toys and always has something to eat. I don’t know how to get her to stop it except taking the house away.

        Please somebody help me

I don’t have much to offer besides moral support. My rabbit does the same thing. He loves to bite and nibble his cage bars, chewing off the coating and spitting it on the floor. So charming! It can be hard to stop this behavior because sometimes, in the absence of any underlying problem or boredom, they’re just doing because they like to and because they can. Mine chews his door when he wants to come out and he chews the lid when he wants treats.

That said, I would suggest weaving sisal rope through the bars or even zip-tying a piece of cardboard over the area she can reach to chew. I’ve heard some people use bitter spray to dissuade chewing but it needs to be reapplied often and some rabbits weirdly enjoy the taste. I hope this helps and you can get some peace and quiet.

I’m not sure taking the house away would help as she will still have access to the side bars…. Like my Henry…!!. Who tugs and pushes and rattles the whole neighbourhood !! (Until I come with the spray bottle….).
She’s probably miffed as she is shut in the cage for longer than she used to be….

Any chance new pup and her will become friends….?

Thank you pinknfwuffy! I tied some sisal rope round her favourite bars and she has stopped biting those bars!! Looks like I’ll have to buy some more though as she’: just moved on to other bars lol! Such a great idea thank you again!

Thank you Vienna! Its strange, she doesn’t really bother with the side bars, she will have the occasional nibble at them but not as bad as the top bars! Spray bottle? I have heard spray bottles with water can help is that what you use? She still gets out to play as much as possible the new pup hasn’t interfered with her play time at all I am hoping so, new pup is only 9 weeks just now. We are planning to let them properly meet next week, choosing the method of having the pup on a lead and letting Muffin roam around the house. it would be adorable for them to be friends

I do use a spray bottle with water in it on Henry as saying “no” while hes in a pulling tantrum (lol) doesn’t work. So i say no, then spray and say no at the same time…. I had to spray about 3 or 4 times before he realised and then he stopped. That’s reduced to spraying just once now….

Think i’all give the spraying a shot, muffin is now biting and pulling the cage again and I’ve took her house out for the night at least the sisal rope worked for a few hours lol!
