Last month Luna had clear nasal discharge under her nose, without any other symptoms. The vet ruled out dental issues and said she had a small respiratory infection and prescribed her smz/tmp for 12 days. After slight improvement, the vet prescribed Baytril for 10 days. On day 7 and 8 of the Baytril, Luna’s nose was completely dry, but last night (day 9) and this morning (day 10), I noticed a little bit of fur under her nose was sticky again (but her nose is not actively runny). Is this really a respiratory infection? I have made another appointment to see the vet on Monday and am going to request a culture. Any ideas/suggestions?

This is a pic of her nose that I took on day 10 of the smz/tmp treatment.

My Red was the same, his dried up on Baytrill then was moist again afterwards. A Culture & Sensitivity would be best to put your mind at ease if nothing else.

If you do C&S test, find out when optimum time to have this done as the antibiotics she’s been on may affect the results.

I believe they need to take a sample from deep in the nose, from the wall *i think*.

It’s possible there is fungal infection that baytril has had some affect on. Baytril can suppress spores. I do not know if this is true of smz/tmp. Something to ask the vet?
Could still be bacterial and just requires longer course of baytril too.

I was just looking at your past threads. Has her running nose coincided with when you got that bad hay?

jerseygirl – good thinking! I looked back on my calendar and Luna’s nose was running before the hay incident, which I guess is a good thing because it’s one more thing I can rule out.
