I’m not exactly sure what category this topic should be under, so I guess I’ll put it here.

For over 2 years, I had the best rabbit I could ever hope to have. Her name was Frodo, and she was only about 2 and 1/2 years old. I won her at a fair, so I’m unsure of any preexisting health problems. She has never shown any signs of being ill and always seemed to be a really happy and healthy bun. Yesterday, at around 10 AM, she let out a small squeak like noise. A few family members, including me, went to her cage to see what was wrong. The worst thing I could’ve ever imagined was right in front of me. She was spread out and lying on her side- dying. It happened so quickly, and no one knows what could’ve happened to her.

The only thing that I could think of is the living situation we’re in. My family has been living in an RV for the past two months due to losing a house, and we’re just stuck in here while we’re searching for another house. It’s quite cramped in here, and she was having to live in a smaller cage than she was used to. The cage was still big enough for her to stand, bounce around in, and lay down comfortably. She was out of her cage to roam the RV the majority of the time. I’m thinking that the stress of it all could’ve caused something to happen? Not even two months ago, our beloved dog died due to a heart attack caused by the moving RV. Maybe something similar happened to Frodo?

She’s always had an unlimited amount of hay and fresh water. We gave her romaine lettuce and carrots a lot as a snack. We never gave her anything toxic.

Luckily, the owners at the campground we’re currently residing at let us hold a proper burial for Frodo. Anything that could possibly help me figure out what happened to her is welcomed and much appreciated.

Carrot are not good for rabbits often, but i dont think that is what killed her. It does sound like a heart attack or maybe a stroke, both seem to be fairly common in rabbits, but otherwise im not sure

I’m so very sorry for the loss of your bunny.

Unfortunately, without a necropsy being performed, there is no way to tell what caused your bunny’s passing. It could have been an ongoing illness. Bunnies, as prey animals, are experts at hiding illnesses and we hear of bunnies passing very suddenly often here on BB.

I’m sorry for your loss. It must’ve been very tough, to loose both your dog and your bunny in such a short time.

Frodo sounds like a wonderful little girl. You seem to have taken very good care of her, so I don’t think you caused it. Some bunnies are sensitive to carrots, but that tends to cause sticky poop and that’s not lethal.

A heart-attack sounds likely. We very rarely know what congenital weaknesses our buns might have – they don’t show symptoms if they can help it and most things won’t show up in a routine vet exam.
She was lucky to have a loving family.

That’s awful to hear, I’m very sorry for your loss. From your story there wasn’t much that you could have done. Bunnies are extremely fragile animals and their health is ever delicate. Heart attacks are indeed common. They are very susceptible to stress, even an overly curious cat or dog can give them such a fright that they can get a heart attack.

I’m glad that you could arrange a proper burial for her, and I hope this will help you to recover from the loss. I wish you and your family all the best in these already difficult times.

Thank you everyone. Your kind words mean a lot to me. I can only hope she wasn’t in pain that I was unaware of. A stress induced heart attack seems to be the only likely explanation for her sudden departure.

I’m sure to adopt another bunny when the time is right. Frodo showed me how great companions they are, and I’m forever grateful for that.
