I have not long bonded a spayed female with my neutered buck. Only problem is she seems to be spraying the cage! Is this because the cage ( that they now share) is my males cage and shes doing this to mark? Even tho she has been spayed? She was spayed months ago so i thought this behaviour wouldnt exist! Is it something that will calm down in time? My male is litter trained and his cage was always so clean! Im currently litter training her aswell (well trying to), i just hope this spraying will stop?? Please can anyone help. Thanks

          Hey!

Okay so how old is she? And are the bonded? Also, if she is now in a new territory (cage) that had his scent in it, she will mark it. Even if he is potty trained, his scent is still everywhere, we just can’t smell it. I would use water and vinegar to clean the cage to get rid of all smells and that should help stop her from spraying. It also depends on how old she is because if she is older than a year, it is going to be hard to break that behavior but it is possible!

Hey there, I’m inclined to agree with your theory that she is doing it as she has been introduced to the male’s cage, something that doesn’t smell of her at all. How long have they been in the cage together, and if it’s been a week or so, have you noticed any changes in the amount/frequency of her spraying? I have heard of a few rare females that have taken up to 6 months to settle and stop hormonal behaviours after a spay, so that’s also a possibility, although I suspect it’s the drastic change in living environment for her. If so, I would say it should die down with time. Do you have anything from her old cage that smells just of her? Such as a blanket or a hidey? It might help her to feel like it’s more her territory if there’s something in the cage that smells strongly of her. Otherwise I think you will have to wait.
