I just got a foster bun last night who is young (10-11 months). The rescue is working to set up his neuter this week so they’ve advised me to leave him in the x-pen for now to build litter habits and since he will need to be confined post-op anyway. I have let him out briefly ,  and he’s explored and been accident-free, but possibly because everything is brand new and exciting. I feel bad leaving him confined because whenever I come in the room he runs to the front to be let out/play. But if he doesn’t see me he seems content to just chill. He came from a tiny cage/bad situation so this is much better, I know, but I feel bad that he can’t really play. Any suggestions? He doesn’t seem too into toys, but it’s only been one full 24 hour period. Am I a bad foster mom for cooping him up until he’s done with his surgery and healing?  I understand the logic,  but it means he’s pretty isolated because I feel bad about coming in the room too often and hyping him up without letting him out to run and explore.

Well Im probably not the best one to be giving advice but…Id be letting him out! Lol

If he’s demonstating he has good habits, I don’t see why he can’t come out more often. Some rabbits just have good habits despite age or their neutered status. Post surgery may be a different story and you might have to limit his movements somewhat. And they can sometimes have temporary set back in litter habit just after the surgery. I’d take a wait and see approach with that.

Can I just say how happy I am that you have another rabbit in you life.

I too would let him out, haha. Poop marking is easy to pick up, and spray marking is fairly easy to clean as well, if he feels the need to mark that way instead. And, as Jerseygirl said, some rabbits just have good habits anyway

Aw, thanks for remembering me and Mrs. Coach, who was the sweetest!!

I let him out a bit this morning, and I am planning to make a NIC cube “yard” ASAP to give extra run space morning and evening but still allow for containment while he is adjusting. Despite being hyper, he isn’t tough to pick up and seems pretty well-behaved, just has a strong need to explore his new surroundings.

I suppose it depends on how *mad* he is about being cooped up POST-op having smelt the taste of freedom if you let him out now…

I know (my new bun) Henry was fine in his corner of the kitchen until he ‘broke free’ to the living room! LOL And ever since it has been his mission to break free again to explore the rest of the room that he only had 5 long secs in before he was swooped up in my arms ( in slow motion “Nooo Henryyyy”) and before he had to chance to chomp my numerous tempting cables….

And he is in an xpen not a cage, so that should be OK for a few days, no?

PS that’s a lovely avatar piccie… it would have been so easier to access the tube from the other end !! LOL

Haha so true. It’s a catch-22 because there’s definitely a chance if he doesn’t get run time between now and then that he will figure out how to climb the x-pen himself. But it does seem that he’s associated me with going out, and I don’t hear him trying to mess with the pen when I’m not in the room, so maybe we’re good? It’s all new to me since my last bun was so mellow.

My avatar is my rainbow bridge bunny, here’s the silly foster guy, Milo.

Well in my house, it’s “wait till she gets out of sight, and THEN we attack !!!”

                        Awww….what a cutie!!!

I had a foster kitty (with whom we did just awful and adopted him after like 2 weeks ) and the rescue told me to keep him in this dog kennel for almost a week until he was neutered so he wouldn’t spray all over my house. I just couldn’t stand not letting him out so I did several hours a day. And he never sprayed. So I would probably be a sucker with that cute face you are dealing with too.
