I brought home my lionhead lop 9 days ago, today he is 10 weeks old. He doesn’t seem to have settled at all though. I have been following advice from a book that I bought- when I brought him home I left him for a few days to adjust to his environment, only talking to him to get him used to my voice. I’ve only picked him up once and that was to clean his cage. Every time I try to slowly pet him, for example after I put his pellets in, he darts away or sits still and quivers in the corner. I open the cage door to see if he would like to be curious and venture out, /and bought a ramp so he could use it to get out if he wanted, but he just chews it and doesn’t seem interested in coming out at all. I don’t know if it’s related but litter training is also going badly. He used the entire length of the far end of the cage rather than the corner. When I cleaned it thoroughly with pet safe disinfectant and put some of the soiled litter in the tray to encourage him to use it, that didn’t work either. Still uses the entire back cage. How can I help him settle in better and encourage him to be less afraid?

Where did you get him from? Asking this cause mine comes from a shop and he came with a bunch of traumas that took him a while to overcome..
Also, are there noises (kids, other animals, loud tv) or smells that might be upsetting him?
Was he already checked by a vet to make sure he is not in physical discomfort (coccidiosis for example)?
Does he have a space to free roam, like a room or a pen, where you can sit silently with him to let him sniff you out?

Keep putting the litter in the desired spot, move the hay rack (if you have it, or just the hay if you don’t use a rack) to the side of the cage where the litter is designed to be to encourage him to have his snacks & poo there. If he’s so afraid, I’d avoid picking him up as yet and I’d try to invite him out of the cage if possible.

Is that him in the picture? He is so cute! He is still new to the environment, so I would keep trying to coax him out with treats, maybe veggies. He might be a little slow in getting comfortable with his surroundings since he seems to be a little more on the nervous side. I would also put litterbox near the area he is choosing to use the washroom.Make sure when you clean out the far side of cage that you get in all the creases and all the hard to reach areas to completely eradicate the scent – we just use white vineagar and water and it works pretty well.
