        Hey Guys!

I’d love to hear about the first job you ever had.

What is some of the best things you remember about your first job? And some of the worst? Most memorable?

Perhaps some of you are in your first job now, or some of you are like me and have worked several different jobs.

        Please share!

My first job was working as a Nurse Assistant, as it was called at the time. It was in a small nursing home for the elderly. I was 17, had just finished school and moved out of the family home to the city.

My older sister was a Registered Nurse there, so I went along with her for a few days to gain some experience and see if I liked that type of work. I was kinda thrown in the deep end too.

Anyway, it lead to a paying work. I did that for a year before I went on to futher study.

One of the good things about this job was it was a small, friendly team. Very supportive toward me. I liked also seeing more of my sister.

I also liked the Cooks food and bonus meal you’d get once in a while. Every now and then she would do fresh scones for the staff. I think these are like Biscuits  in the US but scones here are traditionally eaten with jam (jelly?) and cream.  So yep, a food memory is one of my fondest memories of my first job.

Less fond memory was working with a fill in agency nurse who was lazy.  One evening it was only her and myself working. This shift included helping the residents get changed into sleepwear and into bed. This nurse set her self up in front of the TV with her paperwork… and despite my asking for assistance, and her telling me she’d “be there soon” she stayed exactly where she was. I wasn;t assertive enough to really have it out with her, I had thought my repeated requests for help would be enough.  So I put everyone into bed myself. I really shouldn’t have. It was risky to my back and their safety too.  I just remember getting home exhausted and bursting into tears and venting.

Another less fond memory was getting bear-hugged by a big burly man who wasn’t going to let go!

Most memorable?  Probably when I got to work one afternoon to see one of the residents attempting to make his way over a 6ft brush fence. All I could see was his walking frame hanging over the fence and one leg. smh. He had wanted to go to the shops..

I did do some occasional baby sitting when I was a teen still living at home, but nothing too consistent. So the above is what I count as my first job.

I started working early to support my horsey habits. My parents said I couldn’t get a horse unless I saved up and bought one myself. I was 14 and was offered a job at the stable where I took lessons and leased horses. So I was a stable hand all weekend while my friends were having fun. It was really hard work. Taking care of about 20 horses: breakfast, putting them out to pasture and then cleaning up the stalls. Then I’d go home for a couple of hours and do the supper chores. I think it was good for me and really taught me a lot about hard work and horses too. And I did save up and soon after I turned 16, I was able to buy my first horse. Unfortunately, soon after the people that lived at the farm re-located and the new owners weren’t hiring. Lots of happy memories from this job. The biggest challenges was the heavy toll it could take on my body. It was a lot of heavy lifting. And many broken toes…..

Jersey- I truly admire anyone who works as a nurse/elderly care. My Grandmother is in a nursing home and I think it would be a really hard job, both physically and emotionally.

My first job was pretty run of the mill. I was a sales clerk at a drug store. I got the job when I was 15. I think I mostly enjoyed it. Most of my paychecks went right back to the store because they sold cool make up and I was 15 lol. I really enjoyed setting up displays and things like that. The pipe tobacco shelves were my favorite because the smelled so nice.

I babysat for the neighbor when I was young, maybe starting when I was 12.

I guess my first real job was at McDonald’s. I applied at the one near my house, but unfortunately they sent my application to a different location. I decided to work there anyway, but my mom wasn’t happy about it. She had to drive me and it took 20 minutes or more by car. I didn’t stay long, but I remember them making me climb inside the play area to clean in there (everyone else was too big). After that, they kept telling me I could go home after 30 minutes of being there. They would say they had too many people scheduled and it wasn’t busy. Well that really made my mom mad because she would have to turn around and come get me right away. So she told me I needed to quit. This was when I was 15. She said I could get a job when I turned 18.

My first proper job was a special needs assistant, before that I was doing Ironing and washing pots and going to the shops for the elderly that lived nearby, I did it because we didn’t have these stores that bring food for you now, also some were very lonely out in the countryside, they were all friends of my grandparents, so it was just really a bit of pocket money, I used to watch a bit of TV and have a chat with them until a relative came to help.

This is a great topic.  So interesting to me.  I love reading about people’s first jobs.

I was like lbj10 and did a lot of babysitting from 12-20 years old.

But my first real job paycheck type of job was when I was 14 or 15.  I can’t remember (I know I was legally too young and so I had to get a work permit to be allowed to work).    I worked at a local park/attraction from when I was out of school (June-August).  In the  parking lot, the park allowed overnight RV parking and in some places, even tents.  So it was my job to get them signed in and out, take payment and make sure no one snuck in.   I loved it except in August – In Alaska it is rainy and very chilly, and I was stuck in a small unheated trailer freezing my britches off.  I had the sugar jitters cuz I sipped on hot chocolate the whole time to keep warm.

Many people from other countries did the whole RV or tent experience.   I loved talking to all the people that came from all over the US and in from all around the world.  Maybe that’s why I  liked the forum. It’s like my first job in a way, but I now I can do it from my warm home!\

I just had so many jobs until I graduated from college and started a career, it’s fun to remember: assembler, receptionist, college campus messenger, cashier, candy-maker, phone operator, customer service rep.

My WORST job was as an assembler. I was 19, just trying to get an easy job while I studied.  I was told it was going to be hospital products.  I got there and it was for maxi-pads. Oye!  It was sort of like an episode of Lucy, but definitely not as fun as chocolate!  I remember one of the workers at lunch came over and said….”Bet you’ll never tell anyone what you do…I don’t!”    LOL!!  I only lasted a day!  I’m not the most coordinated and was pretty slow at that.     Next time I took a job assembling Christmas toys, but I realized then I was not suited for assembly work.  Either too antsy or too  slow!  (Plus I wanted to be a dentist! )   You have to have seen the animated Rudolf story to get that.

I wouldn’t say I’ve had a ton of jobs. I worked retail for a very long time. But I did work at a vet for a short period of time before I started working in a department store. I was also an engraver. Then I worked in a microbiology lab, camp, teaching assistant (college classes) and, of course, I was a bird/snake/turtle wrangler (among MANY other things) at a nature center. Now I just sit at a desk all day. *sigh*

My first ‘real’ job (not babysitting for friends ) was at a long term care center (hospice) for children. It was just a temporary position while someone went on leave. After she came back I was able to transfer to the janitorial department while occasionally helping in the laundry department. Then I later transferred to the dietary department where I stayed until I graduated from college. I honestly didn’t want to take the temporary job at first because I didn’t think I could handle being around terminally ill children…but I’m glad I finally decided to take the job, reasoning that it would only be a few months… but ended up working there almost five years, and now sometimes regret leaving. But I love where I am now.

                            Fun thread

My first job was at a cinema. Possibly not the only reason I got it, but I know I got it because in the interview the manager mentioned he’d just been away doing some fencing work on a property he owned. I asked where it was, and lo and behold it was out in the country, nearby where I grew up. So we had a discussion about how my family tied into that area. Anyway, the job was alright. I think I had just turned 18 at the time, I had a long commute to get there, about 45 minutes by bus I think, but it helped me through Uni, gave me spending money. Allowed me to save up to travel overseas etc. The perks were free movie tickets, and getting to eat popcorn and drink the soft drink when the boss wasn’t paying attention. I used to add extra of the butter flavour to the popcorn machine because it tasted so much better that way, lol.

At busy times, it was hectic but the time flew by. Think Harry Potter movie releases. Lines out the door, extra popcorn stored in the warmer in the kitchen, and we still couldn’t keep up. The worst times were between sessions. We only had 5 screens, so if each session went in around a similar time, there could be an hour and a half of just nothing. Stone, dead, nothing. We’d get lonely old people ringing up, just to ask us to read out the synopsis of every single movie because they didn’t have anyone to talk to We had choc top ice creams that we sold, that we had to scoop and dip ourselves, talk about an arm killer! Also the worst part, having to tell a somewhat engaged couple to leave the cinema because they couldn’t continue doing what they were doing. Oh and also, probably one of the only places open on Christmas Day, which meant having to work it sometimes.

In the end, I didn’t quit, the cinema closed down. I was offered a transfer but the other locations weren’t convenient for me. Certainly some interesting times, and it always amazed me how many people could never remember the name of the movie they came to see!

                              Guilty as charged….
For me, it’s because I don’t plan for ages what I want to go and see, I check up on the cinema program 30 mins before leaving to go to the cinema.

I think there are 2 groups of cinema goers.
Ones who wait for ages for this ONE film to come out and then go and see IT.
Or like me, I know I want to go to the cinema, any film, and see whats on.

Or two other groups of cinema goers : one with a memory, and one without a memory !!

Now, what was I talking about…??!!

I guess I started late with my first job. The first time I actually got paid was when I started working on my PhD, and after that when I was a teaching assistant. I volunteered most of my time before then. I didn’t get paid to do my masters, or run the lab I was working on at the time, or organize a conference, etc… the biology field is seriously broke back home and runs on volunteering. And there isn’t a culture of part-time for students.

I did get a lot of cool part time jobs since I moved to Canada, from teaching assistant to coordinator of a volunteer network, advisor in a career centre and science interpreter

My most thrilling job (not!) was in Sydney – there was a postal competition (back when internet didn’t exist!) for a brand of toothpaste and we had to separate the ‘YES’ replies from the ‘NO’ replies !!! There were hundreds of envelopes !!!! Woo-hoo.

The plus side was that we noticed only half of the stamps were date stamped and so we kept those back, steamed off the stamps at home (a caravan in the courtyard of a backpackers in Central Sydney!! !) and then used them on our correspondance back home for the next 12 months!!
I think we had about 60 dollars worth of stamps. Every penny counts when you’re travelling on a shoestring (and when you’ve got bunnies in real life !! LOL).

My first real job was when I was 13. I started doing transcription and some translation for profs at the local uni (colleagues of my mom’s). Good money!

Before that I did some babysitting but I don’t like babies or kids so it wasn’t ideal.

My first ‘real’ job was a typical cashier. I hated everything about it and it was the job that taught me I did not like dealing with people on a regular basis.

On my second day of training, I was left alone at the register when a woman came to check out. I told her the total $100+ and she brought out huge grocery bags full of pennies. When I explained I was not allowed to accept over 50 pennies unless they were in bank rolls. She got very VERY angry and chucked one of the bags at my face. When my trainer came over to see what was wrong she threw a bag at her as well!

Also, money is filthy. I’ve never washed my hands more than when I was a cashier. Every 30 minutes my hands would be black with dirt and ick.

I lasted there for 2 months. My next job was much less stress inducing.

I had a woman throw clothing at me. She wanted to buy it, but when told what the price was she chucked it at me. o_O I didn’t normally have bad customers. Just “well intentioned” ones that would ask me if I was pregnant. Grrrrrrrrr………..

No, the more exciting stuff was the drunk guy peeing on the floor in the little boys dressing room, people falling down the escalator, and let’s not forget the full on fist fight that happened in the middle of a VERY busy time. It had nothing to do with the employees or the store. There was a long line in front of one of the cosmetic counters. Some kid was trying to get away from these other kids, he darted behind the counter and was cornered. They threw him to the floor and started punching and kicking him RIGHT IN FRONT OF ALL THESE CUSTOMERS STANDING IN LINE! So I guess it wasn’t really a fist fight, more like a one-sided beating.

Did anyone come out of the line to help him…. or were they afraid of losing their place in the queue…?

My very first job was at 16 as a sales assistant in a jeans shop. I hated it. I used to work from 5pm to 9pm on a friday (and all day saturday and 1-5 sunday) and literally you’d be lucky if 2 customers came in during that shift, it was so boring. I spent a lot of my time cleaning and remerchandising the shop, which I didn’t mind. When I was in University I didn’t work during term time, no way I’d have had the time, but I worked every summer in various pharmacies. I quite liked working in the pharmacy because I was studying Pharmacy at Uni. My first proper job was as first pre-reg pharmacist and then a fully fledged pharmacist. I found it really stressful having people’s lives in my hands and the hours were long, in such a crazy busy pharmacy – we could have 30 prescriptions waiting to be filled at any one time. I left my house at 8am and returned at 7pm everyday monday-friday. I had literally no life I was so tired all the time – to add to that people are so rude to you when you’re a pharmacist. The Drs treat you like dirt when you have to query something and especially when you have to correct their dosage errors. The patient’s aren’t much better, we’ve had to call the police on occasions and I’ve gotten shouted and sworn at for things totally beyond my control.

I left that job to study for my PhD which I’m still doing – it has a different kind of stress! Everytime I feel overwhelmed I just remind myself I’m not in the pharmacy!! haha

All those older ladies wanting to buy face cream? No, they wouldn’t have stepped in. LOL
We surrounded them and yelled at them. There was glass everywhere so we didn’t want to get too close. Our intimidation seemed to work because the aggressors ended up fleeing from the store with several of us in hot pursuit so we could see what car they got into.
