Hi again. So we’re coming up on a month and a half with Patton now. He’s continuing to grow, the family is having a great time with him and he’s clearly enjoying his new life.

Over the last couple of days (especially today), I have been experiencing something new from him- licking. Particularly my leg and knee. Some of the kids have said he licked them before, but he had a feast on me today.

I am probably the one who pets and gives affection the most among members of the family; my wife is the primary veggie/treat giver.

So while I HAVE been licked by a bunny before, it got me curious- is Patton doing this because I’m basically one big giant salt lick or is he showing affection? If both, do you think it’s one more than the other?

        Thanks all!

        B

I think it’s primarily to show affection. Bonded rabbits groom each other a lot. It strenghtens the bond.

My Bam has always been prone to bestow licks on people, so I’m guessing it can be a signal of submission too – since he does it to strangers. Like he’s saying: “I’m a nice guy, I hope we can be good friends”. But he also does it to people he knows very well, and it seems important for him. I pet his head for a while, then he insists on licking my fingers. Then when he’s done with that, he pushes his head in under my hand again and it’s my turn to pet him. And this goes on for a couple of hours.

Most likely affection — congrats! You are loved
