        Hey everyone
Does anyone else have a fussy bunny?
When I first got him 4 months ago he ate all of his hay from his rack no issues, then I swapped hay to a local pet store one and he threw it all around his cage and as far as I know not eat any, so I rushed back out to the big pet store got the hay he was preveiously on and since then, he wastes so much hay, I give him the Timothy hay and he throws it around his cage while eating small portions of it, then as soon as it’s on the floor he will only pick at it once or twice and soil the rest. I have treid a hay rack, hay ball and a small box which he likes to eat the hay from.

When I put in new hay he goes straight to it like I’ve been starving the poor guy and starts the process again. He must waste a good 70% of the hay I put in.

Sorry I’m useless haha but any ideas

My buns do this too. Theyve chewed up hay racks before, so those only help for about a month before i need to replace them. Im not sure if its a normal bunny thing or not, but if not, ill be lurking for advice on this as well

Hi Mikey sorry for not replying sooner been using my bunny as a test subject, his usual hay is abit similar in appearance and smell than the one off hay I tried, he seemed to be throwing it all around so he can pick the best bits and leave the rest, this last week I bought a better type of hay smelled and looked better and all week I have had a hay ball with his usual hay and a hay rack with the new one and he hasn’t touched the ball at all, and hasn’t thrown the current hay around anywhere

Interesting. Ill have to see if my rabbits do it more with different cuts. I already know they prefer second cut (they will flat out ignore first cut unless very hungry). I wonder if types of hay will make them less messy as well. Thank you for your experiment data

Yes!!! My Bramble will only eat decent amounts of one particular, and very expensive hay. It took me over six months to find the hay he liked, I tried everything I could think of and eventually bought this stuff and he seems to love it

Kirstyol, I’m ashamed to say it but I have to buy hay from the UK for Bam. He will eat a little bit of Oxbow hay that I can buy here though. But local hay? As if! There was one he liked, but that farmer went out of business
Cut does make a big difference. Bam likes soft leafy late-cut hay.

I’m also in the UK, pets at home have a decent selection actually Bramble used to eat excel hay and foliage but he went off it although he still eats excel pellets. I buy mine from amazon, it comes from somewhere in Yorkshire I have never heard of being able to get local hay here but then I live in the city these days

This is what I get: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B012RHPIP0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 its quite pricy but Bramble is such a fusspot, Ron will eat anything so I sometimes mix some different hay in too but I’m pretty sure its only Ron eating the other stuff, Bramble is so picky!
