Hello Everybun! I purchased 9LB of oxbow orchard hay. Should I pull the hay out of the original plastic package and store it in a storage bin? Currently I just pull hay out of the plastic bag whenever needed.

I would take it out of the packaging because plastic traps moisture, and moisture on hay leads to mold. I put my hay in corrugated cardboard boxes then store the boxes in a non-humid room.

good point! I noticed the moisture too. I thought the moisture was what made the hay smell so “fresh”.

Yep, take it out of the plastic, it may sweat inside and go mouldy. You can keep it in a plastic storage tub, but you will need to drill lots of holes for ventilation. I buy hay by the bale and store it outside in a wooden blanket box/toy chest. I used door seals around the lid to keep out insects and mice, and drilled holes for vents in the two sides and back just in case. If you store it outside, make sure to keep the container out of the sun, because that will make it sweat too.
