My bun has been free roaming. However he recently ruined our rug with multiple peeing incidents. While he hasn’t had any more on the rug in a few weeks, he’s still having some accidents on the hardwood (he chills under the couch which has partial rug/partial hardwood). His litter habits have always been so-so. I just can’t keep cleaning this up and spending $ so I bought an x-pen in hopes of getting him back on track with good litter habits. I’m bummed because I’m sure he’s bummed…

Anyway, my plan is to keep him free roaming when I’m around during the day (I mostly work from home) and in the pen when not at home and when we’re sleeping. I want to make sure he gets plenty of time to stretch his legs/exercise. My question is, how many hours a day of free roam is acceptable?

We did the same thing recently. Odette chewed the carpet and I caught her actually eating it. So I bought an xpen.

As odd as this sounds, she seems to like the xpen. It wasn’t immediate. She was upset for a few days. But now she seems happy.

Anyway, I usually let her out at 5:30 pm and put her up around 11 pm. That works for us, but your arrangement sounds all the better.

Make sure you put toys or whatever Basil plays with for stimulation inside the pen. Odette (and most buns) are most active between dusk and dawn, so they do need stuff to do inside the xpen. I put a small dig box with hay too. Basil will be fine!

Thanks for the reply. Tonight is the first night and he started chewing the cage and pushing it (I could hear from upstairs, lol). I went to check it out and there was a flurry of poops and he peed in the bed he claimed from my dog. I’m hoping it means he’s just claiming his digs I washed the bed and put it back. We’ll see how he’s tomorrow which is my long day at the office.
