The area near my friends house is rampant with wild rabbits, there is mounds of them, you cant not see them when you go for walks, and they are really lovely to watch. Only some of them are a bit different.
Wild rabbits here all have the agouti colour. A few months ago I was walking down the road to meet her in the town and was admiring them.
But some of the young rabbits I noted were black, which is not common where we are.
And then I saw him. The Giant. This huge rabbit, twice as big as the others. Black and beautiful.
I watched for a while but I decided to scuttle on as I was late to meet my friend.
As I was recounting my tale of the massive rabbit in the pub to her, a wizened ‘elder’ of the pub leaned over to inform me of the local legend, that is the black beast.

The story goes that 3 years ago, a 2 year old rabbit was leading an ordinary, if not slightly neglected existence in a backyard hutch. He was black, and big, -some would tell you he had flemish giant blood in him, some others say he was bred for meat but was taken to be given as a pet. Either way, I was informed he was not a small rabbit.
He was also not a tolerant bunny, and was left alone due to his aggressive ways towards people, and all other animals, left to lead out the rest of his life in his small hutch.

One day, the owners went down to feed him and found the hutch had been broken into by a particularly determined fox, and although there was evidence of a scuffle, there was no rabbit to be found anywhere. The owners assumed he was gone and moved on with their lives.
3 months passed. And the whispering started
6 months, and the sightings were confirmed to be true.

A rabbit, bigger than all the others, and black as night, was living in the fields.

The old man turned back to his drink and me and my friend went back to our conversation.

As we were leaving , the man turns to us, and whispers:

“Nobody ever found the foxes body.”

My friend tells me she’s never actually seen the rabbit, but had heard the stories and new the girl whose rabbit it was…but had never heard such a dramatic retelling of the story as that man gave us !

I have to say my favourite part of the whole thing is hearing how a domestic rabbit made his way into a warren and just gave himself a (successful) new life!

Omg that is hilarious! He’s probably happier out there in the wild then in a small, outdoor hutch xD

                        Rest In Peace fox =p
