        Hello there,

I just adopted my Hazel last Sunday, so it hasn’t even been a week. She has been fine until this morning, when she began making loud sneezing/hacking noises. I contacted her foster mom who told me she had an upper respiratory infection at one point. I am upset that no one told me this, but anyhow I need to deal with it now.

I have called the vet and made an appointment but no one can see her until MONDAY (no exotic animal doctor was in today or tomorrow, and Sunday they are closed). Do you think it is okay to wait until Monday or are these the type of symptoms that I should head to the emergency clinic for? She is still eating, for sure, and I think water drinking and bowels are normal. Does anyone know of anything I can do in the meantime to make her feel better?

        Thanks.

URIs can be serious is left untreated. That being said, I think you’re probably okay waiting until Monday. If she is still eating and pooping, then it isn’t what I would consider an emergency. Keep an eye on her, of course. But a couple of days probably aren’t going to make a lot of difference in this case. Plus you will probably feel better taking her to someone that you know and trust. Sometimes emergency vets are not all that knowledgeable, but it depends on the clinic.

For the meantime, make sure she isnt cold. You can try to help drain her snot by turning on the shower really hot and bringing her into the bathroom (not the shower/tub), then close the door so the steam stays in. The steam will help loosen any gunk she has and should help drain it out a bit. I wouldnt stay in for more than 20 minutes though to avoid over heating or stress

Thank you all for the advice and suggestions! She seems to have gotten a lot better, but I will still bring her to the vet on Monday to be sure.
