My 5 month old Californian Harley has exhibited a lot of bonding behavior with me without any humping or any clear signs of questioning who the boss is. One weird thing that’s started happening in the last 2 weeks now usually at around 11pm is she’ll get excited when she sees or hears me coming over and she’ll greet me like normal with all attention focused on getting to me. She usually sniffs, ducks her head, and settles down until the petting stops. But lately she has been getting a couple pets then she starts kind of swinging her head from side to side depending where my hand is. If it’s in the middle of her back she’ll just keep trying back and forth. She usually gives a soft nip and then she stands up and licks and nibbles my forearm. While she’s doing this she usually let’s out what sounds more like a high pitched grunt, but it could be a whine. Not really clear on that distinction. It doesn’t sound like an angry grunt and her body doesn’t twitch when she does it so it leads me to believe it isn’t angry grunting. And instead of hiding or scooting to a corner she’ll keep following my hand positioning her head under it. Now as weird as this might sound since everything I’ve read says rabbits don’t like their butt scratched. Well… not my girl. She’ll put her front paws on something so her butt sticks out and she won’t stop the previously mentioned behaviors until I scratch her but and the tops of her back hips. I would think she just itches and needs a scratch but she doesn’t try to scratch or rub on anything by herself.

I’ve used every combination of keywords in searches I could and I’ve gotten no clear answer on any sources. Anyone else know what’s going on here? Because I’m lost on this one. Not too mention from day 1 this bunny has defied what people would call normal behavior. Immediate attachment and immediate bonding. Within the first week she would jump on the couch and sit in my lap. Of course pooped on me too… she will let my girlfriends 3 year old just make all the noise in the world a couple of feet away from her and she won’t even flick an ear over it. Is my rabbit defective?

          Sounds like puberty!

Btw you’re not alone, my bun clearly didn’t read his own instructions booklet, because he loves to have his butt scratched and appreciates paw massages, amongst other weird things

Ughh… good to know but since I’ve had her I’ve been debating on letting her have 1 litter and spaying or spaying her when she was ready. Kind of forces me to decide sooner than later.

She’s been incredibly easy to work with. I know the breeder I got her from so I was around her and the rest at around 5 weeks. Where the others hid by mom, Harley was the one out front sniffing around. She’s been weird since day 1.

I have friends with kids that already hate me because their kids play with the rabbit and they give me that look that says thanks dude now my kid wants a rabbit. So if I could get some good results with her kits socially and as good house rabbits it could be worth the time if for nothing else just to make friends lives hell. Was hoping I had more time to weigh it out.

As someone that got stuck with a bunny (he was a random present), I wouldn’t risk to breed her just cause friends’ kids find her cute: a bun is an extremely demanding and costly pet, so I do hope that people consider that before getting one. Kits won’t need just “a home” but a *good* home. Also every bun has their personality and just because she’s fun and outgoing, it doesn’t mean her kits will be like her.

In my opinion it would be best to just spay her as soon as possible and address the friends to a shelter (lots of buns in need!) or a professional breeder.

Yeah that’s called a joke. And that’s not really the intent. She’s just been quick to learn and seemingly focused. More so than any other animal I’ve tried to teach anything. I have a couple people with real interest after they’ve seen how she is with people already. So I told them if I decide to let her do 1 litter I could save them a couple bucks going to a pet store or finding a breeder since I’d just give them one with a packet of info on food, space, training and all that stuff that i do know or can easily copy paste. And that would still be a while away since i wouldn’t try to breed her before she’s a little bit older. still undecided because I really only want one more for company for harley. Don’t feel like getting outnumbered by bunnies. And I don’t really like the idea of giving animals to pet stores. So I’m weighing logistics of nightmare versus success.

Eh, sorry for not getting the joke, since it’s pretty much not a joke most of times people have people telling them “oh if you get a litter I’ll definitely take one”, then you have people with a bunch of hamsters/rabbits/cats that no one wants (or that got adopted and promptly returned) and blah blah so on

Where do rabbits come from… I doubt people go out and catch them wild… If I was actually soliciting for it that would be one thing. But I’m not.

I think it is well understood where they come from.   And it is understood you are not soliciting. However, it is the discussion that is not allowed. The rules state:

                          D.   Discussions of Breeding and Rabbits as Livestock: Discussions involving intentional breeding (of any animal) and meat & fur rabbits are not allowed.

Please read the Forum Rules and Guidelines for futher detail.
