        Hi!

My beautiful little rabbit, Lori, was spayed 2 days ago – she’s doing really well now, and is getting back to her usual eating and drinking amount.

I want to get a rabbit friend for her soon, since I, and my partner, work and are out of the house quite a bit.

How long do you think after spaying should we wait till we get another rabbit from the shelter?

I discussed this with the vet. She said Lori was doing really well, and that even next week would be fine. I discussed with her about Lori’s hormones, and if it would be better to wait a few more weeks until they settle down. My vet said that if I introduce a rabbit next week, while the hormones are settling down, it could actual comfort her more and aid the process while she’s getting to grips with her new physical makeup.

What does everyone else think? How long should I wait? Is next week too soon?

A month to six months for girls. Next week is way too soon. You need all of her hormones to be drained, and you need to make sure she is healed correctly and safely. Not all rabbits like to have bunny friends around. Many are perfectly happy to be single and get aggressive and stressed if they are forced to try to bond to another rabbit. When she is healed and her hormones have drained, please let her pick out a friend at the shelter, dont pick one out for her. If there are none she really likes, try again a few months later. If she still doesnt like anyone at the shelter, she likely wants to stay single

How do you let a rabbit pick another rabbit at the shelter? Surely the car ride to the shelter alone would be enough to make her highly uncomfortable and put her in a state where she might dislike every rabbit near her…
