Hello!!! I’m a new bunny mother to one handsome young lad, named Biscuit. I got Biscuit two months ago (he is 6 months old now). I setup his cage in my bunny proofed bedroom and ever since he became fully litter trained I have been letting him roam around freely for 16 hours a day (he is only in his cage when i’m in school). Now I have been considering removing the cage completely so that he  can roam around even when I’m in school. I have started leaving the cage door open when I leave to get him used to the freedom (my mom is home for a while so she checks up on him every now and again). I guess what I wanna ask the more experienced bunny parents is if it would be better for Biscuit to keep the cage or take it away completely. He will of course have a hiding spot (possibly multiple) hay and litter will be in a fixed position, he has never had any accidents on the carpet or outside his litter box for the past month so I’m optimistic on that front.

Thanks so much in advance ^^

This is personal preference really. Even in a bunny proofed room, bunnies can still get into trouble, and if I wasn’t around, I would feel better knowing my rabbit was secure in a cage for that small portion of the day. However, you may have complete confidence in your set up and that’s great. You could always take the cage out for a day or two and see how it goes, and if it doesn’t go well, put it back again.

It also might be worth noting that some rabbits see their cages as their main hidey spot or their main domain. If he feels this way about his cage, taking it away completely might stress him out. I think you should keep it there, but leave the cage door open (or just take it off) for a few days and see how that goes before deciding if you want to get rid of it or not

Thank you guys so much! I’ve decided to leave the cage door open while my mother is home and can look after him. Then ill remove the cage bars if all goes well and see how that goes
