My 10 month old male rabbit has all of a sudden started humping me and pretty much everything else. He has a fluffy bed/pad in his cage that he has started humping as well. He’s always lived with a big white stuffed rabbit that is his friend. He loves grooming and sleeping next to this stuffed rabbit, but the past couple days he’s also been humping it like crazy. I don’t know why this has just started all of a sudden since I thought a 10 month old rabbit was already well passed the point of going through puberty and getting crazy hormones. He doesn’t bite me or do anything that would cause a big issue, but it is annoying trying to go through life with a crazy rabbit attempting to hump me constantly, and it would be awkward to have him do this when I had friends or family around. I’ve considered getting him neutered but honestly I’ve always been afraid of the chance that the anesthesia or medications could end up hurting him or killing him and he hasn’t had any behavioral issues or issues with spraying so it seemed like too much of an unnecessary and scary risk. Could it just be a short phase he’s going through, or why else might he just suddenly decide to start humping everything?

I have a 2 years old bun that’s not neutered. He doesn’t hump people and only humps his plushies, but I assure you the humping will and must go on as long as the bun is “whole”. Not letting him vent off his hormones would actually be very bad for him. So if you don’t want humping, you need to get him to surgery. On the plus side, neutering is less traumatic than spaying, so the risk is relatively small

With bucks, if they’re not neutered, they’re going to mount things like mad. We all know breeds like a rabbit, haha.

My buck was never too big on spraying or mounting, but at around two yrs of age he started mounting things a lot. We’d been planning to get him neutered before anyway, so we did, and the problem was gone.

The best option would be to neuter him – bucks recover quick, and it’s not as expensive as a spay! But if you don’t do that, do not stop him from mounting things. It’ll make him a grumpier bun overall, so it’s better just to deal with it. If he mounts you, take him off gently. I did that with my little guy and pretty soon he stopped doing it to me. I highly doubt it’s just phase. More likely he’ll continuously do it. Anastasia doesn’t hurt bunnies. My two are perfect after a neuter and spay. Neuters are already much less risky than a spay, so I’d say go ahead.

Yep, since his hormones make him hump crazy, he will continue to hump all things possible until you get him neutered

I agree, it’s probably just his male hormones setting in, different rabbits mature at different ages. If you’re terribly worried about the risk of troubles during a neutering op, you can get pre-op bloodwork taken to test for organ function etc.
