My rabbit suddenly passed away on saturday. He was bonded to my rabbit bella, i got bella second so i have never experience her being on her own. She seems almost happier that he is not here however i know she loved him very much. She was so dependant on him and never done anything without him. She wouldnt come out the cage without him and would do everything that he done. She basically copied everything that my poor dead bunny done. Now she is eatting more, binkying more, coming out the cage more, jumping up on furniture more often than she did and generally seems happier. I just want to know why she is acting this way? Does she prefer to be on her own? Should i not get her a new friend? Or do you think this is the way she grieves? Or has she found a new sense of independance? Im so confused…. can anybody help or has anyone had a similar experience?

I suspect she feels more independent because she is no longer the submissive to your dominant bridge bun. I would give her time and get her a new friend only if she starts showing signs of loneliness.

Do you not think she would take to a new bunny if i got her one at the moment? I ask this as i feel so sorry for her even though she is acting fine. I feel terrible leaving her herself and i feel i cant leave her to go to bed. I cant watch her without my heart breaking knowing her best friend isnt here to comfort her anymore

Normally I would say go for it – but you just explained how she’s really come out of her shell and seems happier than before.

She seems sad now.. not coming out her cage and cuddling up with a teddy so iv decided to get a new rabbit for her. A wee baby i pick up next week! Back to the bonding process…. dreading it!

Make sure the new baby is spayed or neutered first!

Hes only going to be 8 weeks old so too early for a neutering. My female rabbits spayed already so i think im going to bond them and get him neutered when he is older.. see how it goes.. ill seperate them if it doesnt work out and try again when hes older if it fails.

It’s not a good idea to try to bond an unaltered male even if the girl is spayed. If you were able to bond them, when he hits his hormonal teenage stage, they will most likely fight and the bond will break. I suggest getting this new bun and waiting on the bonding. You can house them next to each other where they can see and smell each other which may help with the bonding later on and might make your bun feel less lonely.

You could always get a rescue rabbit, already neutered and ready to bond. Often they will even do the bonding for you

Wait, why won’t you qualify? 3 metres by 3 metres is a lot…
