Not sure if I chose the right category…..

In light of recent flooding in my area and the upcoming hurricane that is expected to hit us smack on I am making sure the buns are prepared for an emergency. I have their travel carrier easily accessible with a blanket already in it and would grab a bag of pellets if we really did need to leave but 2 things:

1. The carrier is a cat sized carrier- bun is 5 pounds and daisy is 4. they would both fit but it wouldn’t leave them lots of room. Should I have 2 carriers? or would it stress them out more to be apart during that stressful situation?

2. the  type of evacuation I’m talking about would be just having to leave our home (example: tree falling on home, flooding, electricity out for days) and I doubt there will ever be a situation where I can’t get to a store relatively soon but in that time frame pellets would be their only food unless I have time to get some hay together. if anything would happen they would only be without hay for a day or two, would I need to supplement something for the missing fiber?

We are still recovering from major flash flooding that happened last week and now a category 4 hurricane is heading right for us. This is the first time I’ve had buns to worry about- with the dog’s just clip the leash and run! and luckily if the electric does go out it’s no longer 80 degree days so I shouldn’t have to worry about them getting too hot.  My animals come before I do and I just want to make sure I have everything to make an evacuation as bunny safe and stress free for them as possible.

I think it’d be best to put them in the same carrier if they are bonded. Bunnies take lots of comfort from each other and in a stressful situations when the humans are stressed out and lots of stuff is happening, they will do much better together than apart.

You could just pre-pack a small bag of hay and keep it in a bunny bug-out bag with a jar of pellets. It’s good to have a bunny bug-out bag, you can look it over once a year and exchange what needs exchanging/renewal. If stored in a dry space away from direct sunlight, hay has a long shelf-life.

I hope the hurricane won’t hit you. But preparedness is always wise.

Thanks bam! yes they are bonded and whenever daisy is startled she immediately runs over to Bun to keep her safe. I figured being apart would only stress them more. and I can figure out how to give them more space after the fact. and I always worry about the shelf life of hay- but other people here have told me the same thing about as long as you keep it dry. plus since we know the hurricane is coming this weekend I could bag some up now or in a couple days which would put my mind at ease knowing it is still fresh hay and I would make sure to keep it dry.

the main thing I am worried about are the trees. Like I said our area is still recovering from a major flood so the ground is already saturated. more rain on top of that is not what we need. add high winds to that and there’s bound to be some trees falling. and a bunny bug out bag is a great idea! I have a spare water bottle i’ll add to it as well. We have a relative who’s home Is tree – free and that is where we would go should we need to leave our home. we are surrounded by lots of big old trees. Water, food, hay and familiar blankets will all be packed and ready before the storm starts! Lets hope it changes its path by Friday!

You might prepare provisions for a few days. I live in a hurricane state and while they usually get the stores open fairly quickly, afterward, you never know. Fresh water is the big thing.

I hope Matthew loses strength and veers back into the sea. I know the stress of trees and storms. Stay safe.

I live on the delmarva Peninsula in maryland. Usually they veer off the coast enough by the time they reach us all we get is lots of rain and rough surf. Hoping Mathew will do the same but as of right now we are smack Dab in the middle. Hope you don’t get hit! I’ll be making up a bug out bag since I don’t have one for them yet anyway and it’s already goof to have. We keep extra gallons of water so they’ll have all they could drink! Crossing out fingers it heads more out to sea

Stay safe! I just went through two typhoons in a row here, so I know the feeling. I personally would use two carriers, but if you have only a limited time to evacuate, the one should be fine. I always buy extra canned goods, non perishables, and bottled water just in case. For the rabbits, keep an emergency amount (for one or two days) of hay and feed in a plastic bag that is easy to grab if you have to leave quickly. Also I keep major important documents and some cash in a plastic sleeve envelope in an easy to access place so if need be I can quickly grab it. If you have a car, make sure the tank is full. Hopefully you won’t have to leave your home, but it’s always better to plan for ‘just in case’.

You are right in the path, but a lot can change in two days. Hopefully you’ll miss this one, too, but it’s always good to be prepared.

Hay can be compacted in a freezer ziplock bag or something and weighs nothing.

well in 24 hours they have now changed the path. it appears it will veer off to sea around the Carolinas which means if we get anything it’ll just be lots of rain. We are all prepared for flooding as we are still drying out from last week but at least we should be safe from the winds. hopefully it stays on this path!

Mortimer- I can’t imagine! Luckily the storms usually lose some power or go farther out to sea by the time they get far enough north to us. So while we do get the heavy rain and wind its nothing compared to the lower states! The big thing here is the trees. Add heavy rain and wind to a community who is still drying out from flash floods and that’s no good news! Glad you are safe now!

But I have made my list and will be restocking the bunny first aid kit and bug out bag, you never know what can happen storm or no storm.

Funny you should ask, because Spike and my family just weathered Hurricane Matthew. We are all safe, fine, and did not lose power or get any damage. No flooding either. We got the tropical storm bands, but our town was just on the edge so the damaged areas were very slightly to the north.

I have had a Bunny Bag for hurricanes since I moved to FL. Usually it’s one bag, but yesterday I made one small plastic box with a half bale of hay in it be my hay/litter supply, and packed a duffel with the rest. I put pellets in a tightly closed plastic container (like a lunchbox size full); bottled water; a small covered container to pour it into; large trash bags for soiled litter, etc.; paper towels; a small bunny bed for comfort; baby gas meds; tube of foot sore meds from my vet; and he goes into his big carrier that has a padded bottom for warmth and comfort. I have had more in the bag in the past, or less hay and some litter, but this was a new bunny and not as much time to pack.

I almost moved him into his carrier to go with me to a safer room around midnight, but the reports showed that it was just high winds (35 mph) and we were safe where we were. He was happy with a treat of pellets and didn’t even sit under his tunnel. He feels safe around me and my family. He stretched out this morning like a bunny on vacation.

I won’t detail my prep. for my folks. Suffice to say it’s pretty tiring, and tiring to put most of it back afterwards. Keep the bunny bag packed and ready once it’s made.

I’m glad you guys didn’t get too much! I’m farther north on the Delmarva peninsula and luckily it looks like the storm will veer off before it reaches us. We may see some rain over the weekend but nothing major. at one point we were smack dab in its path but luckily that changed a day or so ago. that’s a great list! I’ve never had buns before to worry about so I’m creating that plan now. hopefully i’ll never need it but better safe than sorry!

Glad to hear you are off the path now. They really had us going for days. There were weathermen non-stop for a week with their models, and as it got closer it got worse. We really lucked out.
There are two kinds of weatherpeople – the ones who want to help you prepare, and the ones who are drama queens who just like to scare everyone. The drama queens are trying to make us believe it’s going to do a u-turn and come back. The others are home napping. I mean, it rains in Florida in October, right?

The media now-a-days only cares about audience and nothing about giving accurate and helpful information. This is why I tend to steer away from mainstream media -_- I’m sure the local companies love it too because every time I speak to someone who lives down there they tell me all the water, alcohol, gas and food is completely sold out. Why people are getting intoxicated during a hurricane is a whole other question.
