I know there are many posts here about inner ear problems, however, I am a worried bunny mama. My husband and I have had our flemish giant Emmett for about a week now, he is our first rabbit. He is about 4 months old. We took a look in his ears this morning and there is some dark brown gunk. He is a very happy and relaxed guy and doesn’t seem to be bothered in any way, but of course we are worried about mites. If anyone who is experienced with rabbits could take a look and tell me if I should be as worried as I am, I would greatly appreciate it! He has a vet appointment scheduled for next Saturday, as it was the soonest he could get in, but a week is a long time to worry!

To me, that looks like mites. However, an outer ear infection can cause debris and gunk in the ear as well. I wouldn’t worry too much as long as your bun seems healthy otherwise (eating and pooping normally).

If it is ear mites this is easily treated with the proper dose of Revolution.

          Beautiful big bun

What a cutie pie! It almost looks like a waxy buildup. But, as LPT said, it could be the early stages of ear mites. It certainly doesn’t hurt anything to treat with Revolution. If it’s ear mites, it should clear up. If it doesn’t clear up, then you know it’s something else and the vet should do further testing.

And now, a word from our sponsors…

Do not use fipronil (e.g. Frontline, TopSpot, etc.) on rabbits. It’s toxic to them.

You may now return to your regularly scheduled programming.

Thank you both so much! I was wary about trying Revolution or anything without seeing the vet. I really appreciate the input

Always best to go with the vet. Some vets will measure out the precise dosage for your bunny’s weight.

Not sure where you are, but Revolution has to be purchased from a vet in the US anyway. They can help you with proper dosage too.
