I hope someone can reply and give me peace of mind.

A girl who owns a rescue with different kinds of animals, mainly bunnies, gave me some ivermectin for my bunny, Calli. She said to give her a drop of it on her back. . Well the syringe had a needle on it and I couldn’t get it off. So I gave a drop. It was extremely small. And I didn’t make sure to drop it on her skin, instead by not thinking, I dropped it on top of her fur without parting the hair to get to the skin. So I didn’t think that would work so I parted the fur and put another drop on her but on the skin. But now I’m freaking out that I overdosed her. I don’t know the strength of the ivermectin. I believe this is ivermectin used for horses and stuff too. She has goats and stuff like that too in her sanctuary.

        I’m just freaking out.

        Heeeeeeeeeeeelp :'(

The drops I put on her were not the size of a pea. Maybe 1/8 the size of a pea. I just pushed the needle slightly til the smallest amount came out and dropped onto her and it a a small needled so like I said only like 1/8 the size of a pea came out. And like I said I don’t know the strength of the ivermectin.

I just want to calm down and not feel like I overdosed my bun and that she is now going to die cause of me.

I’m shaky and having an anxiety attack. :'(

Also when I put the first drop on top of her fur I tried to rub it in, realizing i shouldn’t have put it on top of her fur, but instead on her skin. But I was worried that wasn’t enough so that’s when I put the other drop on her.

Okay I believe I’m fine now

Ivermectin that you can buy at a feesld store comes as 1 percent and I assume that’s the normal dosing. So I assume that is the strength of the one I was given

I read just Now that when giving s four pound kitten one percent ivermectin that you ONLY give one drop. Calli is 8 pounds so I should be able to safely say that she is fine and will be fine. And to never give another drop without knowing the correct info by a vet.

And next time I’ll go to the vet. Or call the vet and ask them what the dosing is for an 8 pound bunny with 1 percent ivermectin. I still have enough for a lot of doses with the amount she gave me.

Don’t panic. If anything you may have underdosed. The correct measurement for selamectin is .1 ml per kg or 2lb of body weight. If you have ivermectin and you applied it topically it probably isn’t going to do anything as ivermectin is usually injected not applied to the skin. Hence the needle. I would not recommend attempting the injection yourself, it should only be done by someone trained to do so.
How much does your bunny weigh and can you confirm which product you were given ?

She said to not inject it and said that she uses it topically for her buns. And only puts a drop once every 14 days x 3

And okay. Not sure what to do then.

I just treated my other bunny luna with revolution. The vet wanted me to bring in calli and luna so he could look at them both before prescribing stuff for calli but calli isn’t showing signs cause it takes a while to manifest and I didn’t want to pay for an office visit when I was worried he would say she doesn’t need to be treated. So that’s why I got the ivermectin from the last instead. She is friends with my friend and has about 60 buns in her sanctuary.

Now I’m worried about her being under dosed

Since I treated luna, the mites are going to start running off her in a couple days and transfer to calliope and that is gonna cause a lot of trouble for her as she will be super itchy and infested.

That happened to me before I got calli and treated luna and after a couple days if applying revolution the mites transfered to Me and infested me for like ten days since they couldn’t feed on hee anymore.

                What do I do?

Luna is going in tomorrow to get her back molars trimmed.

I could lie and be like ‘luna needs some mite treatment’ . they only carry ivermectin. And I could say that I treated her already today but that I want to get some ivermectin to treat her again in a month and to get it now so I don’t have to come back and get it and then use that for Calliope? It was just a thought. But bad idea.

                Anyqya sorry just stressed.

They are gonna sedate Luna to do her molars. If they have to put her under it will be 200 dollars more but if the sedation works then I can bring calli in on Friday to the vet who gave Luna the revolution and pay for her to be seen I guess?

And I don’t know the strength of the stuff she gave me or anything about it. She just gave me a bit of what she has.

calli weighs 8 pounds. And all I was told was that it was ivermectin and that she applies it topically to her buns when needed and only one drop at a time every 14 days x 3

I’m sure Cali will be fine. I think the stuff you got was 1% injectable Ivermectin. It’s frequently used with Guinea pigs and rabbits, and I’ve read that many apply it topically and see good effect.

I’ll look into this a bit more. I know there’s 1,87% ivermectin oral paste for horses, also available in feed-stores in the USA. A dose the size of a small grain of rice is sufficient for a bunny. We recently had a member here who successfully treated his rabbit for ear mites with this.

                      Okay thank you

By going off the dosing that Roberta gave me, I don’t even have enough for one full dose.

So I’ll bring Calli in tomorrow with Luna. And have then give me revolution instead.

Kind of frustrated at that woman for not knowing what she is doing and trying to tell me to do that. It didn’t feel right when she gave it to me.

If I gave calli only two tiny little drops of ivermectin, should they be able to give me revolution instead? Or does it need to be stuck to ivermectin or do I need to wait two weeks before even applying revolution? Which is of course a completely different med but for the same thing.

Thank you for your help. I see now by what you guys said that it was a severe underdose

I think your rabbit will be fine. Breath. I would call Roberta back, and ask her if it was 1% or 1.87%, and tell the vet. Your vet will be able to determine if you should stick with ivermectin, or try revolution. I have had good success with ivermectin. I have used a pump spray on my rabbits a few years ago. I used rearguard from the UK, which I ordered on Amazon in the USA. The directions were x-many sprays per category of body weight. Like 1-4lb, 5-8lb, etc, got a certain number of sprays, directly on their skin. The first time I did that, I also forgot, and sprayed the fur. I tried to rub it into the skin, but ended up spraying again – with the fur parted. I have no idea if that rabbit got under or overdosed – but she was fine. I’m a lot more careful now about measuring the dose and getting the application right.
