I’ve been reading a ton of forum posts about wet chins, molar Spurs, gi stasis, and all of the small weird shaped poops ralphie has been having. I’m almost 100% positive that is what’s been causing all of his problems. His front teeth were all removed due to overgrowth when he was about a year old. He is now a year and a half and I feel like he’s been acting the same as he did when his front teeth were overgrown. I just can’t see them this time. He will not let me feel his mouth but that’s normal. I tried feeding him baby food and he refused. Right now he is laying down on the hard wood floor and honestly
Looks to be depressed or in pain. He just doesn’t look happy. Right now I can’t afford the costly vet
Bill, I was wondering if in the next 3 weeks if there anything I can possibly do to help reduce the pain and help my
Bun with some comfort? I will be making a vet appointment for 3 weeks from now. I feel so badly for my baby bun, please help.

Is he eating? How much? Three weeks is a long time to wait if he isn’t getting enough food. From your other thread, I’m guessing it is molar spurs as well. They can be very painful and can even cause nasty sores/ulcers on the tongue or cheek (depending on which side they are on). The nastier the sore gets, the longer it takes to heal after the spurs are removed. Just something to keep in mind. I realize you’re short on money and sometimes things like this aren’t an emergency. But if the problem is severe, it can become a dangerous situation because bunny is not getting enough food.

He is actually eating pretty well he’s always been picky and only likes certain foods. I have noticed a very small change in eating and I think it’s getting to the point where I need to go to the vet ASAP. I’m wondering if it’s possible for the vet to charge me later and get
Him in sooner? Since he will most likely be getting his molars removed will he even be able to eat? He will have no teeth left he’s already had all of his front teeth removed. I’m not sure why this is happening with him.

They won’t remove his molars. Unfortunately, they haven’t invented bunny dentures yet. What they will do is grind down the spurs on his molars so they aren’t poking and cutting him anymore. Then he will be able to chew more comfortably. This is something that will probably need to be repeated periodically because the spurs can grow back. Hay can help lengthen the time between treatments in some cases.

This is actually fairly common in rabbits, especially ones with a shorter face. Since your boy had his incisors removed, it is no surprise that he is now developing problems with his molars.

Thank you for all of your help. Well the vet that did his insciors was not a good vet. Very almost secretive about information with the surgery he had. I will get him in as soon as I can. I just hope it’s not too bad since I can’t see them. When I saw his insciors from the front they weren’t bad and when the vet flipped my bun they were way worse I even thought. I just am expecting the worse I guess. Do you have any advice on how I can help him until I get him to the vet?

The only thing I can think of would be to provide him with easy to eat foods and you can ask the vet if you can get a pain reliever before the appointment. Others might be able to chime in on this with suggestions.

Should I mush pellets and water or maybe pellets and baby food? I’m not sure what to do about the hay situation. Hopefully he will still eat his veggies for now. Ugh I hope he will be okay until then. Thank you so much for all of your help. I really appreciate it. I’ve been worried for about a week and just now finding out some clues on what’s going on.

Maybe the vet would take a partial payment if you could get an earlier appt. You can certainly call him and ask. Or, as LBJ10 said, maybe you could get some pain reliever for him. The most common pain reliever for rabbits is Metacam (Meloxicam). I haven’t bought any for over 2 years, but I just checked my bunny health records and found a receipt where it was $32 then. It’s good that your bunny is still eating his veggies pretty well, but you may have to go ahead and make a pellet mash and try to feed him if you think he isn’t getting enough food. Most bunnies really dislike the force feeding, but if they need it, you have to do it.

Just called the vet, unfourtunatley they do not accept partial payment and could only give me estimate on the exam. I set up the appointment for 3 weeks from now. Until then I’m not sure what I should do or if his health is going to decline. I feel like a bad bun owner ☹ are his dental issues my fault or due to his breed? I’m just not sure what is going on with him since he is my very first bun and he’s only a year and a half. We’ve only been to the vet once and it was a terrible experience since he had to have surgery and the vet was just not nice or sympathetic for my situation. I’m sorry for all the questions that may sound stupid or obvious I just had no idea any of this would ever happen to him. Thank you all so much for all of the advice it’s very helpful.

Did you ask them if you could buy some Metacam? I would think they would at least allow you to do that. If he doesn’t like baby food, then make a pellet mash. You don’t have to force feed him if he will eat on his own. Sometimes bunnies will eat pellet mash or critical care from a bowl. I would try that first. The goal is to supplement what he’s eating so he doesn’t lose weight or go into stasis.

What breed is he? I have my lop’s spurs filed twice a year. My other 3 buns don’t have dental issues. My lop has the typical squished face, so he had dental problems because of his skull shape. Wavey teeth (maloclusion), and pointy spurs. If you can get credit care, or some sype of other credit, that woudl be best, and then youc ould get his appointment sooner. Otherwise, there isnt’ a whole lot you can do. Metaca is a vet pain prescription, and if he stops eating you’ll have to syringe feed him. If he gets ulcers from the spurs, you’ll need to find a way to pay or emergency care. If he wo’t eat hay but keeps eating hsi pellets/veggies, that is OK. But he really needs to be eating hay. Perhaps you could bake hay cookies with ground up hay (hay “dust” from the bottom of the hay bag)? There are plenty of hay cookie recipes on the internet. My favorite is 1 cup hay, 1 cup oatmeal or ground pellets, 1 bunch parelsy, 1/2 banana, 1/2 carrot, puree, bake, dry. I am going to try make bunny cookies using critical care instead of the oatmeal/hay mix.
