Earlier this week we noticed one of our buns is losing hair around her hindquarters (photo attached.)  Is this something we can treat?  We did a forum search and read through several of the hairloss posts, but it wasn’t obvious how they were resolved.

Lulu is an 2 1/2 year old female albino lop that we adopted around 6 months ago from a down-sizing family.  At the time she was overweight and lived in a cage.  Now she is close to a normal weight and roams free around the house.  For a long time she needed regular grooming assistance around her hindquarters, but in the last month or so, she has been doing much better.  She spends most of her day with her legs kicked back lounging with her step bun-brother and is eating, drinking and BMing normally (as far as we can tell.)

Any advice would be appreciated.  Thanks!

That is typically a sign of urine scalding. It happens when the buns fur around the butt area is wet too often and/or for too long. Since the fur is gone, it is definitely something that suggests a vet visit might be necessary

Thank you for adopting this girl! She must be very happy, the way you describe her lounging-position indicates that

Is the hairless skin irritated and red? Is she often wet down there? Urine scald can be due to a UTI that requires a course of antibiotics.

You can put some barrier cream on the bald patches after cleaning and dabbing them dry with a soft towel. Bag balm Is good, a beeswax cream or diaper rash cream are other options. A fat cream protects the skin from wetness/excessive moisture and probably feels good for the bun too.

Thanks!  We’ll consult our vet and try some cream in the meanwhile.

Chom has arthritis, and constantly gets a wet bum cause he falls into his pee. He never got urine scald, but he did however get a bacterial infection on his flesh in that general area as well. Looked pretty similar to that. A few weeks of Baytril and he was fine.

                Definitely vet worthy though.

Lulu is headed to the vet tomorrow and I’ll report back.
