        Hello,

I have a female lionhead rabbit who has just turned 10 months old. I’ve always known her to be feisty and I worry about her becoming aggressive as she got older. Well, I was right on that. She bit me a couple of times while I was giving her food. She grunts too. I mean i know the whole thing about female rabbits being more protective of their homes. I was thinking I’d just let her be that way until i can get her neutered. Although there arent any rabbit-savvy vets here, I’m just gonna take the risk cause I honestly can’t have her biting everyone. I’m getting scared of getting bitten and my family doesn’t wanna go near her anymore. Anyways, another thing is she digs. A lot. I’m guessing it’s just normal behaviour? Cause she’s getting older. I also noticed that she grunts whenever I hold a cardboard tube attached to a string into her cage for playtime. She’d grunt, chase it and bite. Then she would binky. I’m not sure if she’s mad or happy.

Hope someone can shed a light on this.

Spaying your rabbit should greatly decrease, if not eliminate, aggression and biting. Regarding digging, that is a natural instinct for rabbits. Many people have digging boxes filled with shredded newspaper for their rabbits. Some people even give their rabbits a tub of potting soil to dig in.

To find a good, rabbit savvy vet, you may have to travel outside of your area. Some people see vets that are an hour or more from their home. For any vet that you are thinking of, you should ask how many rabbits he or she sees and how many surgeries they have performed on rabbits. Here is an article on how to find a good rabbit vet: http://rabbit.org/faq-how-to-find-a-good-rabbit-vet/
