For the record, I won’t be taking my bun far, but this week I had taken Dorothy to the vet to have her ears checked (no ear infection, yay!), and her behavior in the car really scared me at the time. I kept her in a carrier (it was about a 45 minute drive), and she was frozen in fear the entire ride there and back, and I could see her heart was racing and she was breathing very heavily. She wouldn’t eat for a while after the visit too. I know that nervousness and stress from travel is very common in rabbits, but I really want to take her on short trips to her shelter for grooming and because they have Bunny Spa Days and fun things like that, but I don’t want to keep putting her through this.

Does anyone here have any tips for making the car ride easier on buns? The shelter is like 25 minutes from my apartment. Thanks!

Is she used to being in the carrier? If not, i would start there. Have her in the carrier in your apartment for a few minutes a day, and each time she is in there give her greens or a treat. Once she is used to the carrier, you can do the same thing only bring her in the carrier to your car. Sit with her, give her greens or a treat, then after 10 or so minutes, go back inside and let her out. After she is used to that, do the same. Every few days/weeks drive her to the bunny spa days or just around the neighborhood. That should help her calm down a bit when driving farther places like the vets

I agree with Mikey’s suggestions. I keep Odette’s carrier under a desk in her living space. Its one of her favorite hiding spaces.

I think it also helps to have a smaller carrier. I took Odette’s crate to carry her home from the breeder. She was terrified and spent the drive in my lap. She was fine in the little carrier for the vet though.

I meant to ask on Tuesday about Dorothy’s vet visit. I’m glad the visit went well and she does not have an ear infection.

Thanks so much, Mikey and Odette! I actually have been leaving the carrier out in the open with the door open, and curiosity gets the best of her, she hops in there at least once a day now and checks things out. So since she is becoming more familiar with the carrier, I am confident the next trip will be better!

PS: Odette, thanks for the concern, she’s doing great and back to her happy, rebellious self!
